disappointing to say the least

We were supposed to start a clinical trial, mom has NSCLC (adenocarcinoma) and the clinical trial was to consist of carboplatin, avastin and toxotere and then my dad got a phone call this morning and they said that my mom would have to wait a month because she received radiation therapy, I dont understand why they wanted to get her involved in a clinical trial when they knew the wait was 4 weeks after radiation and that she was already receiving radiation, the combination of chemo sounded very promising and now we are going to have an appointment in the Morning to see what the score is I guess. What therapies are you guys currently on? Frustrated but still curious, Carl

hey, Carl,
you need to be asking your onc these questions - but don't be surprised when the answer is something like "your mom needs to heal a bit first". Radiation can be hard on a person, and she really would benefit from a bit of a rest break....

Carbo is very much a standard therapy, as are avastin and taxotere. I haven't heard of the three of them being used together (that's probably why it's a trial) but carbo+avastin is out there.

another thing - trials usually have strict guidelines about what the patient has to either be doing or not doing prior to the trial - radiation might be on the list. worth asking about.

deep breaths, buddy!!!

I don't know why you woud need a trial to get this treatment. My first treamtment regimen back in August of 2006 was Carbo/Taxotere/Avastin. Although my insurance fought me they eventually had to give in and pay. And, BTW, it worked well for me but it was pretty tough.

My husband had radiation and then had to wait 4 weeks also before starting a trial that would randomize him for chemo/Tarceva or just Tarceva by itself. The doc told him that the radiation lowers his immune system by causing his bone marrow to not be able to make the blood cells he needs. Chemo would do the same so they wanted to give him a break before decreasing his immune system worse.

Radiation can really do you in. Also, it takes some time to see if it works. The combination you mentioned sounds pretty tough. Be glad Mom has a brief chance to heal.

I'm wondering the same as Linda. Carbo/Taxotere/Avastin isn't a trial, it is widely used (that was my first line of treatment). Why would they consider that a trial? Can your mom qualify for other trials?

I apologize for the typo or mistake, it is a oxaliplatin, taxotere and avastin with the emphasis on the oxaliplatin since it is used predomintately for collorectal cancer, the are investigating its use with taxotore and avastin because it is a 3rd generation platinum based chemotheraputic agent. My mom will start carboplatin, taxotere and avastin next wednesday, any suggestions about that combination? thank you, take care all ...........Carl
