Unfortunately, there is a 1cm spot on my liver. The oncologist is sending me to a liver specialist in Cincinnati. I should know by Friday when I get to go. Everything else is still clear.

Wasn't there a conversation recently that they can tell from CT's whether a liver spot is benign? If so, I guess this one isn't.

Crap.

Cindy

PS - I need a lot of prayers right now.

Here is the post, originated from Maddy1977 on 10/26.
I posted this on cancergrace.org and received a response from Dr. West, which is also attached. Hope this helps. Take care, JC

Went to Sloan on Friday for my six month check-up. Dr. said everything was fine lungs were clear and not to see him in another six months but he was waiting to get the actual radiology report. He received the report called me about five hours later to tell me they found nodules on my liver and to have a CAT scan done. Said in report that they were benign but just to be cautious to have the test done. I went today and found the same answer Thank God and I have to go every six months for this problem now. Feel like I can't get a break. Has anyone had this problem? They say it is possible that I had this all my life but they never picked it up before. Anyone more things to worry about. Feeling kind of down. Sorry

JC
Hope you don't mind, but I posted your info on cancergrace.org, as I am a curious person. I was concerned as I said in my post that they could tell they were benign without a biopsy. Here is his response. Take care,JC
Dr. West,
Not with certainty, but there are A LOT of benign liver nodules out there, and if they haven't changed in a six month period, that makes it exceptionally likely that they are benign. We don't biopsy every slightly ambiguous lesion in the liver and are quite satisfied to follow them for change over time, or lack thereof.

I showed upo with liver nodules. Evidently benign, they haven't shown growth in nine years.

It is very common to have cysts on the liver and most of them are benign.

I have had some on my liver that always show up on CTs but never light up and none of my doctors have been concerned at all.

Don't panic... and remember, the liver is VERY forgiving. You can even cut half of it off and that puppy will grow back again, good as new :)

God bless,
Ellen

You'll need a MRI for a definitive answer on whether it is benign or malignant. If malignant, sterotactic radiation may well take care of it.

Hi Ellen,

I guess part of my concern is my oncologist wants me to see someone asap. Granted, he is very proactive, but things have shown up before that he told me not to worry about. Then again, in the beginning I had some lymph nodes light up on a PET and he said he thought they were just swollen lymph nodes but I should have them checked out anyway (I did and he was right).

The good news is University of Cincinnati has top of the line liver specialists.

Hi Highland Guy,

How was it determined they were benign?

Just wondering.....
Cindy

Anitially doctors felt they were probably benign based on how common there are. There belief has been confirmed by nine years of CT scans showing no growth or change in them.

I showed up i the begining with hemangiomas in my liver, here it was all figured out for me i had liver cancer as well as lung cancer, and it turned out not to be the case, Thank god.
Sandy

Originally I had a mets in the liver, which was wiped out with my other mets and the primary tumor with the first round of chemo.

I have much more mets in the liver right now, one of anything rarely worries me. NOW I'm worried but they are comparing the ct scan from chicago with the last one done here to see what's what -- that's with only 2 months' chemo. I was hoping for more of a change. The biggest one measured the same as the biggest one from before so at the least it appears maybe it is stable. In August I had LOTS of liver mets. Now maybe not so many.

One is treatable. The liver, as someone pointed out, reproduces quite readily and benign fatty nodules are quite common.
