cough and getting a yawn out

2 Recommendations

Hi, I have written before about having this cough. I had it before surgery, its what got me to go in and have a cat scan, etc... but after surgery 3 months post op, still have the cough, and sometimes its hard to get a yawn out, not sure you know what I mean. I just wonder does it mean that it will never go away, or is it from cancer in me still... Do any of you have this horrible cough. I hate it.

Hi,
I know what you mean about getting a yawn out. I have that too. It bothers me when I'm really congested, the more post nasal drip the harder it is to yawn and the more I cough. It is worst in wet weather. Not sure why I still have the cough either.

Take care,
Sam

My cough did clear up about 4 months after my surgery. I didn't have problems with yawning though. The problem I had was with sneezing. My brain must have kicked in with a message that if I sneeze it's going to hurt so I couldn't sneeze. It took me about a year and a half before I could sneeze again.

Hi and thanks for responding, it is a pain, and I wish it would go away. I guess it is just something that only time will tell...

Hope your doing well..

Hi, well it is 3 months since my surgery, and I will keep my fingers crossed that the cough will get better and go away. Did yours just start getting better all the time or just go away. Mine does not seem to change.

To be perfectly honest, I was just so used to coughing (I was a smoker), that I didn't really notice it. My husband was the one who mentioned that I was coughing less and less. I still cough a little from time to tim but it's not the same type. More of maybe the air is too dry in the house from the heat. Just try to remember that it does take a while for you to heal completely. I'll bet if you think about it you're coughing less that you were before.

I am one year out from my surgery, and still cough, although it seems to be less with time. It is not as frequent 4 or 5 episodes a day and not as exhausting as in the months immediately after surgery.

I'm not sure if it applies to you, depending on the type of surgery. But, my doctor told me that I might have a cough because of the damage to lung. A cough is a reflexive action that occurs because your lung is trying to inflate. My initial symptom was a horrible cough. It turned out that my right lung was completely collapsed by a pleural effusion. My body kept coughing because it was trying to re-inflate my lung. After the fluid subsided, I still had a cough for a while. Now my lung feels great & I have no cough, but unfortunately, I still have cancer.

I just read some old posts last night because my husband has had such a bad cough for the past 4 or 5 days. It was a dry cough and it was keeping him awake at night. He is being treated for pulmonary embolus(discovered that last week) and pneumonia and saw the pulmonologist who prescribed steroids. Despite all the meds, no great improvement with the cough. I read here that some of you had the same thing and it turned out to be acid reflux. Gave Bill a Pepcid AC last night and he has been 90% better last night and today. A little sore in the rib area from coughing but so much better. Thank you all and maybe try it magazine2-it is worth a shot What a great place to find information.

Hi and thanks for the responses, I have tried to take medicine for Gerd and that does not seem to make much difference, I am hoping that it will go away. I know my lungs need to be much better and I have to push myself to exercise more and get them to inflate more and then maybe that will help with the cough.

Thanks and for all of you that have it, we know what a pain it is...

Hi Magazine2

I know exactly what you mean about the yawn. After surgery it felt like the yawn got stuck and I involuntarily had to yawn twice to get it out. Trust me, it goes away. Regarding the cough, my surgeon told me this was not uncommon, but mine did go away, along with the trouble yawning. Have faith.

Hi, how long did it take. its been 3 months and it just does not seem to be letting up. Life sure has changed since this diagnosis... I want my old life back. But I know that cannot be. sure wish it could though. How are you holding up.

thanks for the email, it sure helps to know that this will hopefully go away.

Hi Diane, my cough went away after surgery but has now returned, just a dry cough. I have no idea why as I had not had it since I had the surgery in August, does bother me as I had it for about 9 months before they found out I had cancer. Will question my oncologist next month and will also have my ct scan next month so I will hopefully feel better about it then, I will at least know if it is something to worry about. Hope yours improves, how are you feeling now that you are back to work. Arletta

Well sorry you have it back.. Its a pain.. Let me know what he has to say.. I am sure its nothing, but still I know how we all worry, every little thing. its seems like forever that I have had this and its only been 3 months.

How have you been?

Hi, Just read your profile and noticed you'd said there's radon in your home. There are places you can get those vents made for releasing radon from your home. Just do a google or ask someone at Home Depot. I know there is one on the net but i don't currently have the web address. My sister's neighbor just had them installed as they had higher levels. My sister's home is fine..they had it checked twice. These houses are pretty close to each other.
Have a good weekend, Veronika

hi, welll I had a unit installed and hopefully that will work , but the problem is the damage is already done. kind of sucks.... having to live this way and again I know none of us expected to get this and all we can do is not give into it.

Have a good sunday. and a good mothers day also.

magazine2, I also still have cough and a problem yawning. The difference is that I can yawn, it just is very painful in my left lung when I complete the yawn. The right lung is the one that had cancer. I was not eligible for lung surgery, so I had Chemo and Chest Radiation, as well as brain radiation. It has been 20 months since dx. I had to have my esophogus stretched and start on Nexium once a day. For a while, it was better; now, it is starting again. I go in June for a checkup with the onc. and I hope to get a scan and find out if anything else is happening. Inhalers and nebulizer treatments help with the coughing and deep breathing and releasing out a pursed mouth help also. Best wishes. Love, Barbell (Judy)

Hi and thanks for the email. I am home sick today and it sure is no fun. I had my surgery in Nov. what do you mean about pursed lips .

I will have you in my prayers for a good scan.... its really hard right before one I know.

Hi Magazine2,

How are you doing? I'm still trying to figure out how to find some of the places I've communicated with people!
I thought I emailed you after this date, but maybe not. Did dI send you info. on our BAC group to be studied?
It's grown to 25 and I meet next Tuesday for a more detailed update with my doctor. I will post the latest information. Did you want to join? Please send me an email with your contact information like address email etc. Thanks Linda

Hi Judy,

Did you read my blog about joining our BAc group to be studied by medical/researchers? If you are interested, I can email you back. Sorry to be so direct, but i'm trying to get more people to be studied! We need it. Thanks-LInda

Linda, what does BAC stand for? My personal email is jbla123@aol.com. I have problems with attachments on my embarqmail account for the time being; so, I use my AOL account mostly. I do get my Lung Cancer Alliance daily with no problem on Embarqmail; but, I tend to use the AOL more. Now that that is said, what is involved in getting studied? Thanks, Judy
