Clarification on Privacy

1 Recommendation

All:

I wanted to clarify the privacy settings as there has been some confusion about what is happening.

Profiles: Your profile is under your control. If you google a member's name and are NOT logged into Inspire, it will show you the member's screen name and a log in screen. Next to that, are photos of members who have set their photo to be "public." This is not your friends list.

If you are logged in, you can see all the information you have entered to your account. This does not mean that is what other members see. I can send you a screen shot of your profile if you would like to see how other members do. Or you can verify, here:

Posts: When you author a post you choose "public," "members," or "friends" to share it with. The author sets this preference. If you reply to a post that is public, then your reply will be public as well.

When you post, if you choose "members" only members of Inspire will be able to see that post and its replies.

Brian posted about this yesterday:

Please let me know if you have any questions or want to change your screen name.

Beth-
Ok, I will admit that I am not good at all this technical computer stuff. I do not post often but I have enjoyed this site and it has given me so much knowledge on my lung cancer. After reading all the comments the last few days about privacy, why not have all posts and discussions under members only, no public as an option? And if I want to only reply to those that are members only, how do I know what was chosen by the author.... Thank you for your patience with those of us that are not very savvy on computers..

why can't we make out screen names private or for members only???

If this is the way you intend to continue to run the site, then when we post a reply to an entry, we should be told at that point that it is a "public" response. Then it would be OUR choice whether to submit it or not. I still do not like the idea of my responses being placed on the web for the world to see. And never will.

It may bring in more support for your site, but it still invades what I "thought" was private since I have NO public checked.

Hi Chessie,

I'm not sure I understand your question. Are you talking about your profile or your discussions?

We'll discuss all the options and as a team and review all the feedback we've received to try and come up with a solution.

Both

My thoughts: I personally don't understand why anyone would care if their "thoughts" and comments were public. Think about it....we really don't know a lot of the members. And anyone can be a member. Also, no one really gives out information like real full name, exact addresses, emails, phone numbers, etc... until you feel you got to know someone.
Inspire team: It sounds like it is important for a lot of members to keep things just in the member community, so why not just make the whole site (every response, post and profile) private or members only? If the "public" wants to read something, or be a part of it, they can become a member.

Chessie,

I sent you screen shots of your profile via email. Nothing on your profile is shown to the public.
