choosing a surgeon

0 Recommendations

my mom just had a ct and an incidental finding of possible stage 1 lung cancer was found we are decided on a VATS surgical biopsy with an upper right lobectomy if it proves to be malignant - we initially saw dr. nabil rizk at Memorial sloan - he came to him without any recommendation - when we didn't have any idea what was going on - we dont know anyone who has used him - anyone know anything about him?? I think he is young - good resume but a positive recommendation would be helpful - also we were told by a nurse that you cannot get a 2nd opinion at sloan - is that true?? can we just choose a different surgeon there. also we went to Dr. Pass at NYU for another opinion andliked him. I saw at least one glowing review of him on this site and so was wondering if anyone else knows about him and would recommend him and also NYU v. Sloan pros cons etc. any help would be great. thanks, by the way we were told too no chemo necessary if it istge 1A and smaller than 4 cm.

If a person is a surgeon at Sloan, he/she is first rate. I went with Bernard Park at Sloan. He did a VATS on me and it made all of the difference. From what I could gather, all of the surgeons are vetted - they make sure they are first rate before hiring them on. I looked at yours and noted that he had had a fellowship at Sloan - so they knew his work before they hired him. Yale Medical school and U. of P. residency - looks like a fine record. And I can vouch for everything associated with a VATS upper right lobe lobectomy - just what I had. Even the hospital food was great! Hardest thing was to keep track of how much walking I did the first day after surgery... not a thing to worry about.

thanks so much for your input - sounds like you were up and about quickly - question - dr. pass at NYU mentioned an epidural catheter he leaves in for a day or so after surgery for pain management - did they do something like this at SLoan - what was the post surgical pain like?? My mom is 77. my son had a foot reconstruction and had a pain catheter delivering additional numbing meds to the foot for a few days which was enormously helpful but i know this is different so im just curious. thanks

Check into ASAP, Radio Frequency Ablation...i just had it done...was dx with lung cancer 6 week ago and had it done tuesday..and back to work...will have PET scan in January to see how eveything is going..will have biopsy results on monday....there are certin criteria to having it done, but i would check, on it...

My husband had Dr. Pass at NYU. He is the best.

Consider this, our insurance provides FREE care at Sloan via the Cancer Network. Instead, we chose to pay 20% (which added up to thousands) just to have Dr. Pass in charge of my husband's case.

He is talented and committed. He is on the cutting edge (no pun intended).

PS My husband also had the VATS. He was hospitalized for 5 or 6 days. He did have that epidural, felt no pain, never took pain meds. after being released.
