hi, my husband casey has stage 3 and after surgery and chemo has just started rt. we were told he would not have side effects for 2 - 3 weeks. well today after coming home, he felt like someone punched him in the chest and he felt more congested. (he has moderate pleural effusion).
has anyone had the side effects so soon?

My husband had EXTREME pain in his chest when swallowing after about 2 weeks of radiation. If that's the case, Casey may have a yeast infection. Ask the radiologist about Diflucan (sp) and also ask about Carafate. If it's not related to swallowing (including swallowing spit), it could be like an interior sunburn. Basically, Casey or you should talk to the radiologist about it immediately.
Pleural effusion can cause a lot of pain in the chest area, it can feel like a heavy weight on as well, someone with surgery done and chemo right after would feel it tenfold I am sure. it is alot of extra weight on the lungs with this fluid in them. If it is very bsa they can drain the fluid, your doctor would be the best judge of that. If he has some pain medication have him take that and rest for now no lifting or anything, let it rest and see if after a good rest and the pain meds it goes away. If it doesn't go away then call the oncologists office, and tell them about it, or you can do this in the other way first call and report this to the oncologists office and see what they advise, i am sure what I have just told you but I am not the doctor in the house so am giving my personal opinion.
I have pleural effusions also and know the pain from that, this is what I am basing my opinion on.
