cat scan stable

so we got the results back from my moms cat scan yesterday...the onc was pleased with the results, he said that it was stable, but he said that her cea blood test was up to 24 which makes him think that something is brewing. He gave her 2 choices, 1st to sit back and do nothing, 2nd to take a different regiment of chemo, once every 3 weeks.....of course she picked to sit back and do nothing....
How can a cat scan come back good and her cea come back high? Does this sound normal to anyone. The last cea she had was 6 weeks ago and it was 12

CT scans "see" solid masses more easily than "clouds." So if a cancer was undifferentiated - that might be one answer. Another is that cancers can "hide" behind the heart or other organs - or, and don't rule this out, the radiologist who read the scan could have missed something that someone else could/should have seen. Also, the CEA could be picking up something outside of the scan area. I assume it wasn't a whole body scan. What didn't they scan?

I'd not sit back. I'd have them perhaps do a PET that would help localize where the CEA reading is coming from - or take the chemo - or DO SOMETHING - but that's my response.

she had a cat scan of the chest and abdomin, the oncologist did say that the cea will pick up something before the cat scan does. I did ask him if she will get a pet scan but he said that the pet scan is mostly used in the beginning diagnoses. which she did have when she was first diagnosted in oct 07
She went through 6 months of carbo/taxol and she has neuropothy from that. I think she is just tired from going through all the chemo plus she fell in jan and broke her hip and still has to use a cane, I think between the chemo and being 80 it has just taken its toll....she may change her mind about just sitting back but for now the oncologist says that he feels comfortable with that decision, so he must feel that its not that bad or else he would of pushed her to get the chemo again. We will see in 6 wks when she goes back to the oncologist, maybe by some miracle her cea count will be down....
