Can Pain Be The Cancer Breaking Down?

0 Recommendations

My Mom had her first Alimta treatment 2 weeks ago. Since then, she has had pain in ther back and chest - the left side - where most of the cancer is.

My Mom also has mets to her pelvis but that pain has not progressed and doesn't cause her to take pain meds.

Could the pain in her chest and back be a sign that the Alimta is working and breaking down the cancer cells?

Cancer Chemotherapy Pain Radiation therapy

Hi lovingdaughter, I would love to be able to tell you that the discomfort that your mom is feeling is due to the cancer breaking down, but typically Alimta does not work that way. Its not the kind of chemotherapy drug that works so fast and so aggressively that it causes bone pain. That's not to say that it can't happen, its just that that is not usual for Alimta. I would instead ask your mom's oncologist to look for the possibility of spread of the cancer to the bones in that area. Please remember that if the cancer spreads to a bone, it causes pain at that bone. Also remember that radiation therapy to the bone that is having pain because the cancer spread to it, helps take that pain away. I hope this helps. Doc
