So here is another bad day for you guys to read about. It seems like every time I turn around im reporting more scary news. As I reported a few days ago, moms in the hospital getting continuous feeding with the peg tube, anti biotics for the pneumonia and physical therapy to try and get her back on her feet. Well today while the nurses were setting up for the blood transfusion mom asked me to set her up so she could cough. Since they began the antibiotics she's been having mucus and junk. I'm assuming its the antibiotics doing there job and she's coughin up what is in her lungs from the pneumonia. Well she started coughing and the mucus got lodged in her airway. She couldn't get another breath to try and push it. Her blood ox dropped to 31 at its lowest point. Her entire body went limp. I learned I work quick under pressure. While the nurses are calling for rapid response I'm holding her up right and rubbing her to get her alert. I guess a daugters love does touch deep cause as the nurses were tryin to get her alert she wasn't responding. As soon as i spoke up and started telling her to cough and breath her blood ox started rising. They got her oxygen back up to 92 before they took her to ICU for tonight for observation. When I left the hospital she said her throat seemed a little clearer but still not good. Her vitals are back to normal, they are keeping a oxygen mask on her and with that she is at 100% oxygen level. Her oncologist came out and talked to us. I asked him y her blood count keeps dropping. she just had a blood transfustion on friday. He said with her chemo (Alimta), she shouldn't have the problem and his only guess with out test is that the cancer may have attacked her bone marrow because over a matter of days her red, white and plattlets all dropped which this is the first time white blood cell and plattlets dropped. Even with all this her oncologist doesnt give up all hope. he still at the end of our converstion says hopefully we can get her feeling better

There is a small machine they used on my mom to suck the crap out of her lungs. Ask the nurses about that. I had to ask for something they never offered it. So ask for it.

Your story sounds so similiar to mine with all the problems your having with your poor mom. We occured one problem after another also. It's the hardest thing to see a parent deteriorate right before your eyes.

Tell your mom to be strong!

Krystal,
When did your Mom have her last round of chemo?

Kristi

Hey Kallie,

I'm so sorry your mom is having such a hard time of it. Stay strong for her and take care of yourself.

God Bless.

Khari

I am new here, but have read a few of your threads. You are doing an amazing job of caring for your mom and I hope both you and she get some improvement and a respite soon.

there is also these patches that they put behind the ears to dry up mucus. When my mom FINALLY got them they did seem to help. As monica said, ask for it they for some reason won't offer it.
good luck to you, this is going to be the hardest thing you have to go through, but all you can do is be there for your mom.

hugs-

Hoping things go better for your mom - she is lucky to have you by her side. Sending positive thoughts your way.

Hi Kalliegirl,

While your mom has an oxygen mask on, I am assuming that would make communication difficult.
Your ICU may have an aid, either a board that looks like a painters easel, or a chart. It has pictures and/or words on it so a patient can point.

My dad was intubated years ago and he kept making a horrible face at me. His arms were strapped down, we gave him pencil and paper and he scribbled, "scratch my nose". I laughed through my tears. A nurse then brought the easel and that phrase is on the chart.

I should probably add that he was intubated because while battling food poisoning in his blood, he may have been over medicated. He survived and is now helping my mom through 3a nsclc.

You are all in my prayers,
Mary
