Boston Lung Cancer Vigil Information

0 Recommendations

Hi Everyone!

I mentioned this a few weeks ago and in a few recent responses to posts, but I wanted to let everyone know about the Shine A Light on Lung Cancer vigil that's being held NEXT THURSDAY NOVEMBER 20th at the Prudential Center in Boston.

Here's the link to the event's website:
http://lungcanceralliance.org/massachusetts/ma-events.html

It's a Lung Cancer Alliance event, put on by the LCA-MA chapter, and it's going to be phenomenal!

For one thing, we're lighting the top of the Prudential Tower in honor of lung cancer survivors and those who did not survive this disease... as well as everyone affected by lung cancer! Boston will be shining a light on lung cancer!

** One important thing I want to mention is that we're going to be having a reading of names of lung cancer survivors and those we have lost to the disease from Massachusetts. So if you or your loved one would like your name to be read, please email me so your name can be included. My email address is:
jgaynor711@gmail.com

*** ALSO, we're going to be showing pictures of survivors and those who didn't survive, so if you'd like your picture included, please email me! And PLEASE email high resolution photos because we're putting them up on a big screen!

This event will include state legislators talking about the importance of lung cancer awareness, as well as leading doctors from Mass General, Dana Farber and Brigham and Women's, all talking about the great work they're doing. Most importantly, there will be stories- personal stories from two very special lung cancer survivors, as well as words from the husband of a young mother who lost her battle earlier this year.

It's going to be so fantastic and I really hope that anyone who's in the Boston area can please come.

Let's show Boston - and the world - that we will NOT stand in the shadows any longer. We're going to shine a light on this terrible disease and make sure it never takes the light from another person we love!!

If you have any questions, please contact me. Hopefully the website will answer a lot of your logistical questions.

Hope to meet a lot of you next week!

Love,
Julia

Hi Julia - I still plan to go, assuming my mom is doing okay (so far she's weak but seemingly stable). It happens to be my little sis's bday as well. She's the emotional one, I am hoping to convince her to come (it might be very hard for her). If she won't, my plan is to try to swing both. I will message you on FB next week as if I am only there for a short time, I want to make sure I get to meet you. Maybe we can exchange cells or something.

Pam

Dear Julia ,
Hi there My name is Leslie

is there a place you are trying to meet people in the area
Hope you see you
Leslie

Hi,
Pam, so glad to hear your mom's doing ok! Let's connect on FB and exchange cells for sure! I'd love to meet you.

Leslie, I don't think you should feel badly about putting up a flier about the vigil because it's not taking away from your co-worker's situation with breast cancer. It just brings attention to another important cause too, one that has affected you in a big way! And also, lung cancer is so prevalent, who knows who else you work with who's been touched by lung cancer and would be happy to know about the event?
That's my take, anyway!

We're not really meeting up beforehand, but just go to Boylston Plaza and we'll all be there! There should be plenty of signage and hopefully the security guards and people who work at the info desks will be able to help direct you if you get lost. I'll actually be there from about 3-m onwards, setting up.
From experience, I will suggest giving yourself a little extra time if you can. Prudential Center can be a little confusing and it's pretty big.
All of us volunteers will be wearing LCA baseball caps so we should be easy to spot - and I'm barely 4'11" so I'll be the shortest one in one of those baseball caps! :)

Hope to see you next Thursday!

Julia

Julia (and Dave):

Good luck on the event! I know you both worked very hard on this and I know it will be a huge success!
Susan

Thanks Susan! I've been thinking of you and your courage and strength as you undergo the trial! Sounds like aside from nausea and fatigue (not too fun!) you're doing ok so far.. I'll keep thinking of you and looking for your updates!

Hey Jgaynor
That sounds so wonderul. How did LCA get the event started? I would love to do something like that here in myrtle beach, SC. My mom's name is Renee Joyce Jordan, and I do not know how to e-mail pictures or down load a picture of her to e-mail. If you would add her name to the list for me that would be wonderful. She pasted away Sept. 18 this year. It is an awful way to lose someone you love. I wish i could travel their, but timing and funds are love at the moment. Thank You so much for all that you are doing for people and loved ones of this terrible disease.
Hugs,
Tonya

Hi Tonya,
Thank you so much for sending me your mother's name. I'll definitely make sure it's read during our tribute.
This vigil happened for the first time two years ago, and was started by a small and passionate LCA chapter here in Massachusetts. They didn't do it last year, and this is the second annual. We lucked out this year because there are about 7-10 really dedicated volunteers who've worked togther to plan this and make it happen. We also lucked out because one of the members of our planning committee has a connection with the skyscraper we're illuminating..
There's another member on this board who's from SC and very active. I can put you in touch with her if you'd like. But basically, it just takes a small group of committed individuals who share a passion and a purpose!
I'm so sorry to hear about your mom... I know how awful it is. Really, working to try and eradicate lung cancer is one of the ways I deal with the loss of my mom. I feel her presence in everything I do.
Wishing you all the best,
Julia

Hi Julia!
That is fantastic! I am so hoping to be a part of something like that someday! I wish I could be there.
Please add my name and face to the list. I have too many more names to add here, but will send them onto you via email as well as a picture. As an 11-year survivor, I have known many and would love to honor their memory.
Thank you for doing this! I will be interested in the details to have something like this in the Atlanta area in the future.
I'll be there in thought.

You go Julia, I will be there in Spirit, can you please add my mother's name to those whose lost there battle with lung cancer. Annette K Donovan. I am a survivor myself and I know she is definetly my very own guardian angel.

God Bless you and all involved for doing this...Thank you!
Is it going to be televisied??
Love and Peace
Stella
