blood pressure HELP please

My dad just had his third chemo and will be having a scan soon. We are terrified. I have a few questions... FIRST of all....... he always says he has these bee sting types of pains in his side RIGHT where his lobectomy was. I think he says he has them in other areas, but MOSTLY there. Anyone else feel these? SECONDLY........ He has been having blood pressure dips. Anyone else have those? He started this journey with some heart issues already so i am very worried. But his doc told him to stop taking his blood pressure meds because his pressure was so low. (well,, one of his meds anyway) so now he just takes the one,, but didnt change this until 3 days ago. I dont know if it just needs time to work itself out of what. Is bloodpressure dips common during chemo? tonight his was 82/60 and then it went back up to like 108/65. Its always been high so thats why he was on meds. It goes from being okay, to low, to back okay. He is taking pain meds,,,,,, and an anti depressant,, he is still taking one of his bp meds too.
Thanks for all your help...
this is been so horrible.......but you are all so great!

Hi: His blood prssure is too low to take blood pressure meds. His Dr should have given him "Paramaters" In other words check his blood pressure each day before he takes the pill and if his B/P is BELOW a certain number, then do not take the B/P med that day. I would call the Dr again in the morning and explain the situation. If he takes a B/P med when his blood pressure is low, it will just go lower.
Speak with his dr. and find out EXACTLY how to handle this issue. Best........................M.C. P.S. most people think they take b/p meds to bring their hiigh blood pressure DOWN. Truth is, one takes them so that the B/P never go UP.

chemo can make blood pressure drop so he may need to get off the BP meds while he's in chemo.

I normally have low blood pressure, when I had my right lung surgery it went so low they were going to stop my heart meds, but then it was discovered that I should have been given potassium because if you vomit a lot you lose this and should be given potassium supplements, sodium is usually in the drip anyway. I never felt faint or dizzy, apart from the surgery I felt weak but normal and was even able to walk about ok. Low blood pressure is of concern if you are normally quite high and it drops very suddenly. Next Thursday I have to have my left lung operated on and I shall certainly make sure I get my potassium this time, it seems you have to do all the thinking for some of these doctors. Elaine

PS I forgot to say I also get the bee sting feeling from my right surgery, I had a PET scan last month and it was clear, surgery cuts through nerves when feeling starts to come back that's when the pains start, it does all sorts of things to your body, I still feel as if I have got broken ribs too and I can't sleep on my right side.

My Dad had the same BP issues. Before chemo his was always high after his second chemo he had a few blackouts . At this time he was taken off his BP meds.Still bp issues with the up and down. He had Orthostatic hypotension. Fortunatly there is meds for this ,it took us a couple of weeks to get the dosage right .I think this would be worth checking with your Dads DRs about
Good Luck

I have just the opposite problem. Since being on chemo my bp has been around 225/112. My primary physical has tried 3 different bp pills plus I have to take lorezapam before my chemo treatment. If the chemo is working but driving my bp up to the point where I could have a stroke at any time what good is the chemo???

My b/p was ideal before diagnosis in February. I had immediate brain surgury and then chemo. My b/p went all over the board. I couldn't get anyone to pay attention other than to put me on b/p medication. I then went off meds totally because of the b/p lows. My blood pressure is now ideal to low. I am currently getting chemo supported radiation. Has your father had a rash of any sort connected with the bea sting type pain? Rule out shingles. I recently got them. 5 to 7 days before rash appears though it does not always appear. Very painful. Viral. The onc had diagnosed as muscle spasm. I had stabbing pain in my back along with aching and burning but no itching. I still have pain though not as bad still awful.

Perhaps this blood pressure problem needs to be addressed by a cardiologist who can then discuss the situation with your oncologist. Does your oncologist know your blood pressure is that high? Is it possible the blood pressure problem should be addressed before the chemo continues? I do not know the answers to these questions but but your doctors should...................M.C.

Hi, I can address both issues.
1st, I also had (and still have) stinging pains in my left side (had a left upper lobectomy a yr ago, then a pleurectomy and pleuradesis 5 months ago). My thoracic surgeon has told me it is normal, and could take up to a year before they go away. It has become tolerable and I have not had to take any pain medicine since early July. So, there is hope.
2nd, I was on BP meds also, and had to get off of them due to a drop in my BP following chemo (down to 70/40 at one point). My BP has gradually increased since, but still not back on meds. I check my BP daily, and if it gets back to where my diastolic stays above 85, I wil address with my PCP.
So, I hope this helps; sounds like similar issues, but there is hope down the road. Best wishes to all of you!!
