Barrett's Esophagus

0 Recommendations

Hello Everyone!

I am just concerned because I was diagnosed with Barrett's this week and I am only a 22 year old female. I hear this disease happens to people in their fifties and beyond, and mostly in males. Has anyone heard of someone getting Barrett's at this age, and if so, were there any complications down the long road since I will most likely have this for many many more years.

Morning, I take it they have'nt dx you with cancer, just the Barrett's. There is a very rare chance of getting esophagal cancer from this-@ one percent. They should continue to monitor you now to watch for early signs of cancer and treat it appropriately. What did your doctor say about you having this at such an early age?
Good luck and take care, JC

I worked with a young man who was diagnosed w/ Barrett's when he was only about 20. He had some type of surgery that was supposed to be preventative as far as developing cancer was concerned. He was doing well when I knew him. Good luck to you.

I was dx'd in my early 30's and require a scope every year.
I was eventually put on nexium and after 2 years on that my specialist claims I no longer have it. My general dr. sent me back for 2 additional years to confirm and now I only need the scope every 5 years unless I have symptoms reappear. I have been taking NOTHING(nexium or any medicines) for 2 years and no return of it!!
