BAD CT/PET

Today I got knocked on my butt - I have some pretty extensive disease progrssion and will start a new chemo of cisplatin and taxotere 12/1/08. I am told this can be a rough combo - is there anyone that can comment on it for me?

There are 3 other options available but the onc seems to think that this is the best one for now. There are 2 phse II trials at the U of MN that I am being reviewed and considered for but I am leaning toward what my onc is suggesting.

My biggest hesitation is I hear the side effects can be horrible - I have tolerated taxol/carbo, alimta, avastin, and I'm a pretty good fighter - any input will be appreciated.

Miravles & blessings to all . . .

I am sorry to hear this - I had Cisplatin - it's hard - but doable. Make sure they gie you Emend (for the nausa) and drink alot of fluids to get it through your system fast - I was originally on 84mg's every other friday and could not tolerate it so it was reduced by 25% - that was easier. I don't know abou the other one. I'm praying for you - good luck!
Karen

Kathy,
I was on Cisplatin too. I didn't have too bad of a time with it - mostly got tired. But do make sure to get the Emend! I only had it once every 3 weeks.

Good Luck, and keep us posted!

Hi Kathy,

My husband was on cispatin/navelbine. He was only able to tolerate two cycles of it before he was switched to another type of chemo. It was the cisplatin that was so hard for him. His wbc couldn't recover fast enough after each treatment and he was beginning to have some kidney failure which is a side affect.

Remember each person has different tolerance levels and as you read, Erin and Karen did alright. You need to be informed of what can and cannot happen and proceed from there.

Good luck to you.

Hi Kathy:

Just wanted to send good wishes your way. My dad did not have any experience with that combination of chemo, sorry I can't offer any experience on that.

I wish you the best of luck!!

Oh Kathy, I'm so sorry about your news. I don't know anything about Cisplatin but Taxotere isn't too hard. You're a tough lady - you'll probably glide through it. Good luck and you're in my prayers.
Susan

Thank you everyone - I will be sure to ask for the Emend.

And will keep you informed.

I'm so sorry to hear this news. My dear friend please keep the faith and keep on fighting.

As far as the drugs go I had cisplatin and another drug my 1st round of chemo and the cisplatin is the worst., I have never had taxol.

As Karen said make sure you get the Emend. I didn't have that the first time I had the cisplatin and I was violently sick. I never want to feel like that again. It is a very hard drug but if you have the Emend for the anti-nausea you will be fine. It was as if it were a miracle drug.

I did have lasting side effects but that is not saying you are.

If your up to talking call me and I can answer any questions you need.

I do miss chatting with you my dear.
Love you
Linda

..i'm sorry but Cisplatin is the base treatement, the rest just make it more , mm "effective"..

..i know it's heavy on the system, believe me, i know, but you really do just have to do it, max dose, right up to the point where either it kills you, or the cancer does..

..s'yr choice..

..s'yr life..

..and remember, s'cool here to talk about those "embarassing" side-effects, we've all bin there, painted the porcelain, from both ends....

...sometimes at the same time..

..ye gods, that was such fun.....

..talk to the girls here for more 'girlie' problems, they've bin there too...

I did 4 cycles of Cysplatin and vinblastin. It was NASTY..............and VERY effective. Stage IV to NED in 4 months!!!!!!!!! Drink lots....eat lite..............rest as much as possible and stay positive!!!!! It aint easy....but the good stuff rarely is.
Best of luck to you.

Kathy,
says get Kytril, then decadron, benadryl and tagamet along with the Taxotere. I have next to no nausea, but take compazine as a precaution 8 hrs after infusion and that seems to keep the nausea to a minimum. I do tend to get a little achy - kind of like flu like symptoms - it seems to be getting worse with each additional dose - another problem I have is swollen feet and ankles, but I take Lasix for that but the Lasix depletes my potassium so I have to take potassium supplements but it is worth it not to have the swollen feet and ankles.

I wish you luck and hope you don't have too many bad side effects. Sorry you are going through this again - it is never fun finding something that works. You are in my prayers.

God's peace - Pamee
