My mom, Joan Gaeta, a life-long non-smoker, was diagnosed with lung cancer in early 2004. She fought a three and a half year battle before succumbing to it in July of 2007. Mom was a devoted wife, teacher, and mother of five.
During her battle, she stressed the need for greater awareness of lung cancer (the number one cancer killer in the world), its low survival rate, and its tragic lack of research funds. She was most passionate about eliminating the stigma of the disease, since lung cancer also strikes non-smokers at a high rate.
Since her death, my siblings and my father started The Joan Gaeta Lung Cancer Foundation.

We are currently planning our second annual cornerstone fund raiser, Dancing for Joan, for February. We are also spreading the word a couple of church fairs in North Georgia, as well as sponsoring the Saint Joseph's Hospital Atlanta Lung Cancer Run and Walk.
If you live in the Atlanta area and would like to learn more about how you can get involved, how to get a ticket to our event or register for the run, send an e-mail to gaetafoundation@gmail.com.
We are also seeking corporate sponsorships for the dance.
If you are a lung cancer survivor and are looking for a a support group, let us know.
