Cancer Avastin Thrush Diabetes Tarceva Carboplatin Lung cancer Folic acid
my husband took cispllatin in the beginning for 6 months with a combo of 2 other drugs (cant remember the other two) then this past summer he did alimta alone - that did no good - tumor in lung got bigger then did Avastin alone- same response not good so now he has been on tarceva 150mg since 9/8/09 wont know if that is working until sometime in Dec when he will get another cat scan
Cisplatin is one of the oldest chemo drugs around. They are now combining it with new drugs, such as
Alimta. You must stay very hydrated, especially with the cisplatin. Ask your doctor about folic acid and B12 shots. These help with side effects. Drink, drink, drink! It doesn't have to be all water, popsicles, sports drinks and watermelon are good alternatives. Good luck and take care, JC
I did cistplatin/etoposide in August and it had little effect. On Monday, they are starting cistplatin/alimta combo for 3 mos. I will keep you posted on how it goes!
I was on cisplatin/alimta/avastin for 6 months. The side effects were mainly extreme fatigue. Some days I could hardly lift my legs or head up. I was given folic acid & B12 shots to help. It's very important to keep yourself hydrated (I didn't & suffered for it). I was put on Avastin alone as a maintenance drug last Dec. so apparently the cocktail worked and that's what counts. Good luck to you.

Hi : my wife susan took alimta after 12 weeks of carplaten/toxal combo. There were problems with the with this chemo combo but nothing she could handle. Two months after completion the oncologist put her on 6 rounds of alimta to hopefully clear up any cancer cells left in her body. The alimta was very hard on her. The main and worst problem was fatigue it was very hard on her. After 4 rounds she told the doctor that was enough and he agreed. Please note we have since learned that people with diabetes are more likely to have a difficult time. Alimta is supposed to be a very easily tolerated drug and there are many people on this board who tolerated it well . But the main complaint we have heard is many have erteme fatigue. good luck sue and gene
Hi,
I was on cisplatin/alimta/avastin. After receiving cisplatin 5 times my dr. stopped it and I am currently on alimta and avastin. The cisplatin (for me) was terrible. I ended up having to have my chemo while being on cisplatin in the hospital.
Like mentioned above, it is very important that you drink plenty of fluids. I also was given B12 shots and folic acid.
I have been on alimta and avastin for a year now. So far it has gotten rid of the tumors in my lymph nodes and keeping the tumor in my lung from not getting bigger or spreading.
Good luck and take care,
Barb
I was dx with stage IV non-small cell lung cancer. It was in my lymph nodes under my collar bones and in-between my lungs. It was in my liver, ribs and spine. I had a tumor the size of a mans fist in you right lung and it was in the fluid around my heart and lungs. After four treatments of Alimta and Carboplatin my CT showed a 80% reduction in the main tumor and only one small spot in my spine. My liver mets had not changed. I have since had two more treatments and get the results of my latest scan on Tuesday. I will let you know how it works out! I have had thrush, fatigue, wierd unexplained pains and hot flushes in my spine and between my lungs accompanied by nausea. At times I have had nausea and lack of appetite. It has been worth every minute. I seem to be responding to the chemo very well. I did stop sugar, dairy, meat and white flour until I started to lose too much weight. Maintaining weight is very important. Here is a link to a website that might help you. There is a lot of great information and support on this site. I hope this helps and encourage you to stay as positive as possible. Don't give up hope. http://www.angelfire.com/pro/ginkgo/cancers.html
My dad just did his 3rd cycle of Alimta. There were little results until now. This last scan (last Friday) showed that his lung and spine mets had shrunk. I wish you the best of luck and keep up good thoughts!
