Article on stigma in AARP Bulletin

1 Recommendation

Greetings. Please see the article, "Easing the Stigma of Disease," that just went live on the AARP site. I mentioned several organizations, including LCA, when I was interviewed, and although my quote that credited these organizations with helping to reduce the stigma was later deleted (according to the reporter), they at least listed them as resources in the left column, "For more on lung cancer and stigma." See http://bulletin.aarp.org/yourhealth/diseases/articles/_easing_the_stigma_of _disease.html

Though they did not focus exclusively on lung cancer, they included important information about stigma inhibiting research, and ended on a note of hope, something I certainly need after reading the recent Newsweek article. I wish I hadn't read it and discourage you from doing so if you don't like hearing lung cancer "horror stories".

If we can't expect a cure in the near future, at least there are new treatments on the horizon and we can always hope for compassion!

Warm regards,
Lori

Thanks Lori-Great article! Betsy

Lori,

I am so excited to see the article, and its focus on the diseases going untreated because of the stigma attached to them - especially lung cancer. Whatever you are doing to get the attention of writers who can get this kind of info out there, keep it up!

Thankyou from my heart, Lori, well said!!

Hey Lori - I read that article in Newsweek - I was so upset and felt so isolated - but then I remembered that that is just what someone ELSE thinks and that we know our own truth - we as LC survivors and fighters must just keep up the good fight - no matter what anyone else thinks - and just do the best we can with what we have. Loved the other article - thanks!!!!

Hi, Karen, dands, Susan, Betsy, and thanks. I encourage anyone who has a stigma story to share it on that message board to show that we are out there, you know what I mean?
And I do think we need to go after the tobacco industry, because if any of you have tried to quit, you know how grueling that is... Yes, it is a choice to begin, but most of us begin when we're young and stupid. Thanks for letting me vent. :-)
