Ankle/Foot Swelling?

My mother's last chemo treatment of carbo/taxotere was about a month ago and her last CT scan showed no evidence of her cancer. She had been on prednisone for a few months since she had developed radiation pneumonitis back in June and the dosage started at 50mg, then 40mg for a month, then 30mg for a month, then 20mg for a week and the final week she was at 10mg. She just finished her 10mg last week and, almost immediately after, she developed swelling in her ankles and feet, sometimes accompanied by pain in the front of her lower legs upon standing or walking. This has been going on for about 3 or 4 days with little relief so today I called her pulmonary doctor because I was concerned. While in the hospital for the pneumonitis, they found a couple very small blood clots in her lower lungs so she has been on blood thinners but a mere 2mg. Before she left the hospital the doctor said the clots had already started to break up.

Mom has been feeling pretty good lately, other than the continuing fatigue, and the only meds she's on are her nebulizer and the blood thinner. Her doctor seems to think the swelling may be an after-effect of the steroids and put her on a water pill for a few days. I apologize for this being so long but I was just wondering if anyone else out there has experienced this. I have read taxotere can cause fluid build-up also but she has been off of chemo for almost a month. My main concern was a blood clot but I've also read that both feet usually don't swell with a blood clot. As I said, her doctor didn't seem overly concerned but I'm just curious of others experiences and I will definately keep a close watch on her. I can still here my mom saying to the pulmonary doctor when she initially found out about the blood clots, "I didn't fight this cancer so hard to die from a heart attack!" That's my mom!

my mom 's feet (both) were extremely swollen and she did end up having a clot in one leg Docs couldnt understand why both feet were swollen and attributed it to prednisone as well. I would like to make a point to you as you mentioned what meds your mom was on- My mom was on long term steroids because of radiation induced cough Her oncologist told me that it was imperative that she also take antibiotics because often when taking prednisone for a while a patient can get severe infections in lung. I believe the name of the drug she was taking was Bactrim might be something youd want to look into

my daddy puffed up like you wouldn't believe - it was the carbo! a few lasix pills later, his ankles returned to their normal size....

Mom started the Lasix last night and the swelling has gone down a little bit so hopefully this will do the trick. I also got her bananas and orange juice to keep the potassium levels up.

Barbsdaughter, thanks for the info. She was on an antibiotic twice during the coarse of the steroids and her blood is still monitored regularly for infection. She also has COPD so I always look for any problems with her breathing too, which would be a clue to other problems arising, but the only problem she has is when she's outside during high humidity or bad air quality.

I also had prednisone for the pneuminits that I had in
may 5months after my last radiation treatment/ The prednisone is wicked nasty I could only handle 40 ml for about a week and had to get off of it. They did check for swelling I didn't have any but I didn't stay on the larger doses for very long . I was seeing ghosts and thinking that I should go call my mom. She died 5 years ago. So I slowing got off the prednisone..

both my ankles were, and continue to be swollen all thru this ordeal. in fact, it was because of the swelling that they found the tumor! doc noticed that when i got pnuemonia, my ankles swelled up, so she took an x ray, and poof! there it was, big as life! guess i owe my life to swollen ankles or they wouldnt have found my tumor so early.

so far, lasix hasnt done much to get the swelling down.

oh well, maybe after the surgery.

hang in there, and god bless.
