So Just returned from the Oncologist office with mom. I guess you can say the emotions right now run somewhere between, angry, scared, frustrated among many more. Mom was taking Carbo and Taxol every week. Scans came in today and shows growth of the adrenal tumor. Doc said no other signs of spreading. He did mention that there were a couple spots on her lung that he's not concerned with at this point because everyone has spots but of course will watch it. He's sending her to have a head ct since it's been 3 months since the surgery to remove the 2 lesions and the wbr. He said there are also several clots in her abdomin. they arent completely blocked but enough to need blood thinners. So the new plan is, starting wed she will begin Alimta. He thinks it might be better for her seeing as its pretty mild with side effects and the taxol and carbo kicked her butt with vomiting and lose of weight. Of course my mom has the look as if the doc handed her a death sentence. Which he did no such thing but she terrified, which is understandable. I'd love it if fellow survivors shared there stories. If anyone has had success with Alimta. At this point i want to print out some stories so she can read them and see theres hope cause she at this point has none

Hi Kally,
I know of a couple of people who have had good luck with Alimta. Send me a message and I'll give you some info that might be useful.
Also, try not to lose hope. There are other chemo treatments. I'm also wondering why the doctor hasn't suggested giving Tarceva a try as it does work very well in a certain percentage of the population.

I too was devastated when I failed first line chemo. I figured it was a death sentence. I was on Carbo/taxotere. On Dec 15, 2005 I started Tarceva. I was on my second line therapy for 2 years!!!! I went into a clinical trial dec of 07 and unfortunately i had progression. I am now on Alimta. It is a much milder chemo. My nurse said they have seen many successes on Alimta. I have not lost any hair, minimal nausea, no vomiting, much less fatigue.
My advice, hang in there, just maybe alimta is the drug for you. I sure hope so.

I know exactly how you are feeling, the exact same thing happened to my dad a few months ago, first line treatment didn't work, the tumors got bigger and there were more popping up in other places. Its so devestating because you put all your hope into that treatment and when you get the news it didn't work, it first kills you to know that your loved one had to suffer through the aweful side effects for nothing, then you feel like you wasted time and are that much closer to losing the fight.

Keep the faith, my Dad's oncologist said that there are over 600 types of chemotherapy treatments on the market right now. To some degree, its just a matter of finding the treatment that works the best for each individual and their type of cancer. You just have to keep going, a good friends mom had to try four different types of treatment before they found one that worked.

Hang in there and keep fighting. The next treatment might be the one to work miracles.

Hey, Krystal,
Having a chemo either not work or work for a while and then quit is not that uncommon. The doctors have a guideline for treatment (NCCN) that gives them guidance on what to do when a chemo doesn't work (they wouldn't have it if it wasn't common!). This also applies to when the chemo is too hard and hurtful.

Regarding the nausea - y'all need to make sure the onc is very aware of it - they have real good drugs to make nausea go away.

Hey, mom - keep on fighting!!! You've got a lot of people pulling for you.

Sending hugs,
Pat

My mother was on Tarceva for the past two months and the PET scan done this past weeks shows tumor progression.

While she was on Carboplatin/Taxol, the right lung tumor shrunk from 3.8 cm to 3 cm. She had to stop taking the drugs after seven treatments due to an allergic reaction. She also got Avastin every three weeks with that combo.

She took Navelbine and hated it as it made her so weak and tired that she could hardly get out of her recliner.

After getting a B12 shot, she is supposed to start Alimta next week. She now wants to get a second opinion because her doctor is suggesting hospice and no treatment. She has been more active than she has been in a long time but her cough is returning.

What are the best second line drugs????
