This is unbelievable. She is about to begin the journey. She is a very strong and courageous child. Prayers for her and her family during this time.
I'm saddened to hear that St. Jude could do nothing different for her than anyone else.
God Bless!

Oh my. This is just terrible. I am thinking of you and your family and I hope you find lots of support here. It is an awesome place. There are lots of Stage IV long term survivors on this board. Your daughter is young and strong. She can fight this!
Pam
Hey i am 32, diagnosed at 30 but if she ever wants to talk please get in touch. I have been stage 1V for nearly 2 years, please please get 2nd or 3rd opinions, get a naturopath, get so involved and together we can get through this for the long term

My wife Cathy is 34, non smoker, healthy her whole life, not even a tothe ache. She had a couugh that would not go away and after being told it was pnuemonia and put on 3 types of antibiotics with no results was diagnosed with stage 4 nsclc.
Cathy has had whole brain radiation, radiation to her spine and then chemo:
First was Taxol / carbo with avastin added after she finished brain radiation. CT scans showed stable...2nd CT scan showed tumors were stable or shrinking. She changed chemo last month to Alimta / avastin because taxol / carbo het her white blood cells hard. Cathy is due to go in for NRI & CT scan Dec. 15th & 17th. I will post update.
Like your daughter, Cathy is young and healthy and keeping an upbeat light on things is very important. Many here are long term servivors of many years so fight this monster and keep as positive as you can.
Live each day to it's fullest and give her as much support as you can. Also, know it is normal as her caregiver to have fear and sadness which at times can be overwhelming. For Cathy & I, putting our fear and this desease in the hands of God has done wonders.
Our love to you all!
Bill & Cathy
It is always hard to see such a bright young child begin a battle with Cancer, no matter what form it comes in.
I understand you wanting to take off round the world with her, life is precious and the time spent together even more so. May something miraculous come your way and allow you the opportunities to do your trip.
Our best wishes to you all, I hope God hears your prayers.
Such a brave young girl and and fantastic family. I will be praying for her and for your family.
Take Care

Hi,
This is a tough one. This one blows my mind actually. Here's the first advice you need to listen to. Any statistics online are most likely outdated. There are many, many stage 4 survivors. You're better off not reading anything on life expectancy.
I wish Haley and you as a family all the best.
~Frank
I am so sorry to hear about your daughter. It really makes me angry at the lack of support because everyone always thinks of this as a smokers disease. Anyone can get this. Your daughter has my prayers as well as you and the rest of your family. Makes me sad to hear of any child with cancer.
God Bless
Paula
Thank you all so much for the prayers and encouragement. Also for sharing your own personal journeys.
And frank, thank you for letting me know to stop reading. I think you are right. Accept for here. You all have give hope.
God Bless You!
I'm speachless. I can't believe this monster has attacked a 15 year old. Let me say a couple of things.
1. Get your home tested for Radon. There is a theory that Radon is is the most common cause for LC, after smoking.
2. God can heal. When my brother was 14 he had horrible leg pains. My parents thought they were "growing pains". Eventually, they took him the a doc who found bone tumors. They removed the tumors from one thigh, biopsied and found that he had bone cancer. My parents were told he would not live to see 15. The night before he was to have his leg amputated, one of our Uncles spent the night in prayer. He was visited by an Angel who told him his prayers had been answered. The next day when they did a pre op Xray, all tumors were gone. My brother will turn 53 next Monday. GOD CAN HEAL!
Please keep us updated on Haley's condition.
Praying with your family.
Hi,
Can I suggest something else? I'm reading a book called crazysexy cancer survivor by Kris Carr. (we're all survivors right at the outset of the diagnosis). This book is fantastic and will do Haley a lot of good, because it teaches her that she's much bigger than the cancer. It's a book that allows her to express herself as well.
Search for all the positives in this journey. Kriss Karr says that "Life is a terminal illness. Cancer patients are just more aware of it." And, so, don't let the cancer define her. Stay positive! It's better than any prescriptions she might have to endure.
Keep in touch with us. We're glad you found this website and that you're here!
Go Haley!
XO~Frank
Frank is right - the Crazy Sexy Cancer Tips book is good! It is fun to read, and has some great advice in it. Your daughter can use the tips that will work for her, and read and think about some of the tips that may not apply. But it is a good read!
My heart goes out to you and your daughter - God does do wonderous things so I am adding my prayers to those from the rest of this site for your daughter!
Erin
Dear Dyal62,
I have nothing to add other than my own prayers and faith -- I too know many stage iv survivors! -- but want to say, as a survivor myself, that I agree with the others:
1. It's best to stay away from statistics;
2. Get a second, third, and even fourth opinion;
3. Continue to seek support from groups such as this one, which will provide information, love, and understanding.
4. Always keep the Faith (which I know you will). God and love heal.
If you need help getting national media attention for fundraisers, please let me know. I know a few people in the media and could forward information for you.
I am sending much love to you and Haley, as is everyone here, and will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.
Lori
My heart aches for you and your family. I am stage four going on my fourth year!!! I was diagnosed in 2005. There is hope.

I too have Stage IV NSCLC but your daughter at such a young age this is totally disturbing to me. I am new to this as well being diagnosed in June but have learned much and one thing is that there is no rhyme or reason to this disease. I will keep Haley and your family in my thoughts and prayers. Let any of us on this site know if there is anything you need and we will see what we are able to do. You would not believe the responses you will receive in support and care from here.

There is a genetic mutation of the cells that happens in some people. They believe that some people may carry a gene (possibly) that when it is triggered by something it casues these cancerous changes to start. My husband was the same way. Perfectly health his entire 50 years and then he got an 'allergy' type cough that lasted about a year. He took Claritin and occas an antibiotic. Then he got a pain in his left groin that everyone thought was a pulled muscle. He went to PT and iced it down. An xray then showed a lesion on the front pelvic bone in the spot that he was having the pain. A bone scan showed more lesions- on his spine, scapula, rib, and it's also in his brain. He feels fine. He goes to work everyday. He had radiation to his brain and then started on a clinical trial with Tarceva. It has been shown to work great in cases of never smokers with lung cancer. Roy went to Sloan Kettering for a second opinion and they agreed with the trial study of Tarceva. He donated his blood to science so that they might find the gene or whatever it is that causes this form of lung cancer. They told him that the study would not help 'him' but it may help future generations. We can only pray! We are praying for the best, but we have decided to just live life and do all the fun things we have wanted to do. We just love life...everyday. We will be praying for your young daughter.
Google Kevin Brumett. He is a young man (early 30s) who was diagnosed in the Boston area. He's had great success with some targeted therapy. You should make sure your daughter is tested for mutations, which someone else intelligently mentioned. If you need more info on him, I may be able to get you in touch with him (I don't know him personally, but know folks who do). There's a chance this might work for your daughter. Kevin's doing great! The radon testing idea is a great one too.
Pam
My wife is 48 and going thru this. I'm totally blown away and saddened to hear about your daughter. Sending the best of thoughts and prayers your way.
Tarceva is a targeted therapy that stops the growth of the carner cells. It works better in some cancers. There are different 'mutations' that can happen in the cells, and these targeted chemos tend to do great at slowing or halting the cancers growth. We to tested our home for Radon as we wanted to be able to point to 'something' but we found nothing. For my husband they believe it's a genetic mutation. Genetic meaning it have to do with one's DNA, not that she inherited it. We wish you the best of luck and tons of prayers are going out for Haley and your family.
OMG - I don't even know what to say. Life is so unfair. I don't have much to add that hasn't been said except that you and your family will be in my prayers.
We are here for you and Haley anytime for anything.
