Hi - I am sorry to hear about your dad. I don't know where he is in this whole process but 13 transfusions in a week seems like an awful lot.

You don't have to sit back, watch and wait. First, make sure you know what your dad wants. If your dad is still in overall good health get his doctors on the phone and ask them what they are trying to accomplish. Is what they want to do in alignment with what your dad wants.

I have a lot of family that work in oncology and as hard as it is to hear as a caregiver, doctors make money through treatment. Some doctors will let you know when it is better to stop treatment and others will give chemo all the way to the end. That is why it is so important to take an active role and make sure you know what the goal of every treatment is.

We always ask why they want to run a test or treatment, what they expect to find and what they can do it they find it.

Just last week they wanted to run another MRI on my husband even though they know they can't stop the progression of this any longer. I told them I don't need to know where every tumor is since it won't change the outcome.

I hope I don't sound cold but I really want you to know that you don't have to sit back, watch and wait. Sometimes the questions are hard to ask but the answers let you know what you need to do.

hey, lilsis,
First and foremost, get with the onc nurses and ask if this much blood requirement is normal or not. If the answer is no, then press them to get you in to talk with the onc on an emergency basis. (this is the fastest way to see the onc). Once there, you need to ask what can be done to help your daddy. (for example, figuring out where the blood is going).

Please, please make the call as quickly as possible.

My mom had 2 blood transfusions. The needed to stabalize her electrolytes and calcuim. He was also DELUSIONAL until they did the transfusions. She was lucid for like 3-4 days after. But, she was terminal and there was no reason to give her more transfusions because it was prolonging the invertible.

She died a week later

What stage is your dad in?

Maybe the transfusions are not blood but are just platelets. I say this because you said your dad's platelet count is really low. That would have to be corrected by many transfusions. However, you still need to talk the doc and ask exactly what is going on.

Iggy He finished his first round of chemo just last tuesday. He was released on wed from hospital and back in friday. It is just platelets but why so many. He is being si mean that his girlfriend who is a cancer survivor is finished and he now has to move out so we have to move him by tomorrow when he is released. He has no Idea and it's going to break his heart. so now he has to deal with this awful disease and heal a brocken heart. We live 3 hrs away from dads onc so we need to find him a new one. I am even more scared now that my dad may just give up. I am waiting for the onc to call me back.. Then I will let you all know what the heck is going on... Thank you everyone!!

This is such a tough disease both physically and emotionally. Believe me when I say we all know where you are at. Just keep having conversations with your dad so you know exactly what he wants and then keep after the doctors to get the answers you need.

I do agree that you need to find out where all of these transfusions are going. If he his bleeding internally they should be able to find the cause.

You are a lot stronger than you know right now and you will be able to get your dad through this. Just take everything one day at a time.

I just pray every night for god to be with him and watch over everyone!!!! Thanks again!!!

My dad had a platelet transfusion on Friday, June 6th. His platelets were very low.. 5,000. Then last Friday he had a blood transfusion because he was borderline on his hemoglobin. He had only been thru one round of chemo so far. But he had 10 radiation treatments prior to that.

Ok dad is doing goos!! He told my sister yesterday that he does not have lung cancer.. and he does not want to talk about it. But other than that I am with him during the day and my sister at night. He is very mobile and just wans me to drive him around. He finally recovered from his first round of chemo. hes back to his skinny self swelling is gone whoohoo. The only thing we are worried about is his mind set he is in way denial. thanks all again the talking to others helps alot....

hey, lilsis
I am so relieved your daddy is doing better. Seriously - if he's feeling better, chances are good the chemo's doing its job. ...and, denial is not the worst thing in the world, as long as he's feeling better. Prepare for the wrestling match before the next chemo session - make up a story if you have to!!!
Sending hugs

Thank you Pat,
We know that the next set of chemo could get worse. He talls us he has to go on july 7th for chemo but he doesnt have cancer. So as long as he gets his chemo we wont argue with him.
