Type 1.5 Diabetes and Pregnancy

0 Recommendations

I am interested to hear anyone's experience of pregnancy while being diabetic. I am hoping to someday have another child... I currently have a 2 1/2 year old who was a 26 week preemie, due to my diabetes being undiagnosed (I missed my glucose tolerance test by 3 days). Since then, I progressed to insulin dependence and am now able to use an insulin pump. I've heard this is the only way to go in pregnancy. So, I'm curious about what I could expect if I attempt pregnancy again. Thanks for your input :)

I feel blessed that i had a child and have had diabetes since almost birth i did shots everyday and they did want me on a pump i feel i did pretty good for not being on a pump but you do have to take alot of shots and check sugars 10 times aday but it can be done even for us diabetics!

My doctor tried to put me on the pump after finding out I was pregnant. I was worried about making that big of a change while being pregnant. I hear having the pump makes it much easier to control your sugars continuously while pregnant. I think the only trouble I had while being pregnant with diabetes was at the end of my first trimester/beginning of the 2nd. During that time, it was very hard to keep my sugars controlled. I actually had a lot of extremely low blood sugars (it was almost like I was no longer diabetic). I asked my Diabetes Educator for advice. She had me decrease my NPH (which is what I had to change to w/ pregnancy). After that brief period, you need to pretty much double up on insulin to keep them controlled. My doctor doubled my prescription for glucose strips, so that I could keep them in check more often. Don't be worried- You're already going to be paying more attention to your body while being pregnant- the diabetes just fits in with that.
