Total Knee Replacement Surgery Tomorrow

1 Recommendation

I'm new here and this is the first post. I have to admit that I haven't really kept up with the posts, time limits you understand.

I'm doing research on the internet about knee replacement surgery. The info seems to say that the surgery is great, will relieve your pain. The patient comments however, paint a different picture. Like, the worst pain, worse than before surgery. Swelling, wish I'd never had it done...it's scary. Just wondering if any of you have had a total knee replacement and how it went for you. I'm 54, have CFS, fibro, gout, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis and feel like my body is falling apart! I've had so many surgeries, that I have lost track of the count.

Hopefully I will have more time to contribute to this board after the surgery.

I have kept track and I am scheduled for surgery # 46 in June. My 2 knee replacements were among the easiest and least painful I have ever had. The pain before was so excruciating that I couldn't walk. That pain is gone and I have full use of both knees. I still have some pain around the knee replacement. You are never told that if you have arthritis-any kind- that the tissue around your knee can become inflammed, but the pain is nothing compared the the pain before the surgery when my knee caps used to slide around in back of my knee!
Recovery was easy because of a wonderful machine that is covered with lamb's wool and gently rocks you leg back and forth . It was so soothing, it put me to sleep.
If you have the screaming pain one gets when bone is on bone, you will be very happy with the results of the replacement. Don't let others scare you off. You usually only hear from the few people who have had problems with the replacement.; not from the thousands who have had successful surgeries.

Don't know if you're still checking these replies. Hope your surgery went well. It will be coming up on 3 wks. ago, right? One thing I can tell you is PLEASE keep up with your therapy! I didn't, due to an insurance mix-up, and never quite got full flexibility back. You have to just do it! Also, ask your doc to detail for you exactly what you can and can't do. I never played high impact sports in the first place, so no prob there. But in the last 6 yrs. I have actually thought a time or two I'd like to get down on my knees to pray. I get on one knee.

So, yeah. Surgery is over and done with. I thought that it was quite painful, but it's been 4+wks now and everything is feeling better. Only thing, I fainted on Saturday, landed on my foot and broke it in two places. Was told by my visiting nurse to go to ER because she wasn't so worried about my foot as she was about why I fainted. So after 2 days of umpteen tests and pinpricks, we still don't know why I fainted. Ain't that great. So now I have to see my ortho doc to see if the foot needs surgery or if the splint they have on from knee to toe is good enough. I don't understand why they didn't take care of this there in the hospital, they had 2 days! Another trip to the doctors office. I am so sick and tired of seeing doctors, I hate it. These last 2 years have been hell. 4 back surgeries (finally fixed), 2 knee surgeries and still have a total knee to do on the left. I was supposed to go in June to take the battery and the bone growth stimulator out from my spine. Its supposed to come out after a year. Anybody ever left one in? I just cant seem to swallow another friggin surgery. When life is this tough physically, it just seems like the end will be so welcome. Not suicidal just wishful...
I haven't quite got the hang of this site yet, I browse it but seem to have trouble with it. Guess I'm computer illiterate...

Well I have also very bad experience of doctors in USA. I had intestine twist was admitted to hospital last year. Daily x-rays & with god's grace I recoverd without surgery. But the doctor ordered my discharge whe I had slight fever. At the time discharge temperature was above 102 F. I requested the nurse to call the doctor to recheck reagrding his orders of discharge. She did not listen & dischrged me. When I reached home temperature shot up & was taken to my family physician. He expressed surprise at the attitude of doctor & nurse. He gave me medicines to help me recover from high fever. So doctors in USA are there to make money and they forget their oath which they take when join as students in medical profession to serve the society.

what luck!!!!!!!

hope foot gets better...wrap yourself in cotton for a little while...
I just had back surgery last thursday for spinal stenosis
(lumbar discectomy). I was in for two days. I have so much less pain now then before. I would recommend this surgery for anyone who is suffering from pinched nerves due to stenosis!!!!

We all need to stay well and out of surgery unless of course it really helps!!

Blessings to all!
Dee

I've had three hip replacements. This one is 13 years old. I am still going strong. I never have the pain I used to have before the surgery. Good luck to everyone who has to have replacement surgery, it's not fun.
