Suggestions??

Does anyone have any suggestions for exercises that won't cause more pain but will help with weight loss and mobility. So far I can still move around quite well but am experiencing a bit more pain all the time. I need to stay mobile and would appreciate any information you might have for exercising. Thanks a lot.

Hi Danndgal,
One type of exercise you might try is swimming and water aerobics. I go to a gym that has an indoor swimming pool, so I can do this all year. It really helps.
I started swimming last summer and could only do 2 laps and now I can swim 90 laps. It takes me about 50 min. and I just love it! I have a chronic back problem and have recently been diagnosed with lupus. There are also water aerobics that can help also, You can either find a class or do it yourself. (I do) You can find the exercises on line or alot of health magazines have them. Hope this helps.

I completely agree with JayRo. I know the Arthritis Foundation in your area has classes that are specially designed for people with arthritis and tackle the exact problems you mention without causing more pain. These classes are lead by certified instructors. You can go to www.arthritis.org and type in your zip code to find the chapter near year and the classes going on in your area.

I hope this is helpful!

Thank you for the reply...I have been "going to" get to the pool...now is as good a time as ever I guess...so will go and see what is available there. Thanks for the tips. I'll also get in touch with the Arthritis society here..the link is US and would not work for Canada but thanks for the suggestion. Take care of you. Danndgal

Also my nerosurgeon recommended the stationary bike .......................wonderful for spinal stenosis sufferers because you lean forward on the bike to ride thus opening up the spinal column...and no pain!

I will have total replacment in both knees some time in the future so no walking for exercise. I am useing a gazel. No impact on the knees. I am trying to do some upper body exercises also.

Hi Ruthiedove,
I just want to say, My Husband (67yrs. old) had a tolal knee replacement last Feb-08 ..

We live near Yosemite national park, Ca. . 3 1/2 Weeks after his surgery, he drove (by him self, stick shift) to Los Angeles (4 1/2 hours) for busness, and was down there for a week working, then drove home. The Dr. said he should stop about 3 times so he could stretch/walk his leg out , so he would not get any blood clots.

For years he has done 1 hour every morning in the house of exercise to build the muscle up around his knee's, and his body, also he would walk a few miles, 5 days aweek up the hills.
He truthfully was not in much pain before the surgery.
He has never been over weight, which is Very important for this type of surgery.

In the Hospital, and when he came home, he had an electric machine that he would keep his leg into, and it moved it back and forth, so to speak. It kept the leg from getting stiff, and not getting clots. It really help to relive the pain.

His Orthopedic surgeon said when he opened the knee, there was really not anytihing left in there!
Dr. also said, most people do not exercise, are not in as good of condition , also my husband went into surgery with out much pain, as most people have.
He never took pain meds before surgery, but did take the IV in the hospital, and maybe a little bit of meds when he came home.

For years he has been taking allot of Omega 3, and sometype of Arthritis Vitimins.

My husband said he was so glad to get it over with, and it was not as bad as he thought it was going to be at all.

I had a gazel for me. He didn't think it did him any good when he tried it! I don't know what your trying to accomplish with it!

Take Care,
April

Hi April/Ruthiedove

Please tell me what a gazel is? I thought it was a lovely 4 legged animal from Africa...? Thanks for your replys. Good luck with your surgery Ruthiedove...stay positive. April I hope your husband continues to improve and it all works out well for him.

Take care of you.

Ann

I, too, am looking for these types of exercises, but I have a difficult time leaving the house. I have tried pilates and am trying to talk myself back into it. Any other ideas?

Hi Danndgal,
I'm not sure of the spelling, but its one of the those machines, Tony Little advertizes..Remember him ?
It stands on 4 poles, you put your feet on the platform, then it goes back and forth while your holding on to like ski handles..Your knees stay stright, but your whole legs go back and forth.
Gee , That was a bad discription lol..

I to a Physical Therapits. I have learned so much, and my Ins. pays for it -: so far!

Take Care,
April

Hi - Yes, I too am "going to get to the pool" one of these days.

Two years ago I went two or three times a week. I found the excess weight just started falling off (with no change in diet) and I never slept better in my life. There was a bit of pain relief.

But my problem is loneliness. I endured it before, but now (having lost a couple of good friends) I can't stand the thought of going to the pool and feeling lonely, lonely, lonely as I paddle around and watch the clock.

I'm a friendly person and in the past, have tried to strike up conversations with other elderly swimmers, without success.

Danndgal, if you're swimming now, how is it? Do you go with a friend?

Barbara
