My flare ups have been horrible lately, but I was wondering what you think of inflammatory and anti-inflammatory foods? do you think they help or not help in any way? does anyone have a list of them?
altho i don't have RA, my flares have been horrible lately as well but i don't know how mine can be related to food b/c i am going thru alot of dental stuff so have basically been eating only yogurt so unless it is the yogurt that is on the inflammatory list & if it is then i'm "screwed". i won't have teeth to be able to start to eat regular food for at least 3 more weeks.
there are lots of different lists out there. some say dairy, some say no dairy. some say distilled water, some say any water. there are soooo many different variations.
I've been experimenting on myself to see if there is any truth to any of the inflammatory food lists.
if i eat alot of sugar, i flare- which is in tons of different foods.
if i eat kroger/ralph's or dreyer's brand ice cream bars, the ones that are vanilla ice cream dipped in chocolate shell, i flare. i did some research, and incidently both of these brands are sometimes contracted to be produced in the same factories. concidence?
foods that bring down my flares- raw spinach. like 1/2 a salad bag. chased with a banana for the potassium. --i cant begin to tell you how surprised i was to find this out.

Sugar causes's inflamation.
Arthritis: A few foods that cause inflamation.
Some of the foods to avoid include anything from a fast food restaurant, soda, and starchy foods such as potatoes. Red meat intake should be minimal, as should anything high in saturated fat. Greasy foods and fried foods are out of the question.
Some Anti-inflamatory foods:
Some foods that may relieve the pain include fruits high in vitamin C like oranges, apples, and strawberries. Oily fish (Herring, Sardnes in water, Wild Salmon not Farm raised etc.) are also helpful as they are high in vitamin E, and grains such as wheat and brown rice are beneficial as well.
Anti-inflamatory vitimins:
A good Omega 3 (not 6 or 9), Clucosamine, Chondronitin, MSM and Hyaluronic Acid.
These lubricate the joints, from what is lost from inflamatory foods, and as we get older.
You can buy those at any health food store.

I hope the following helps you: Avoid the following inflammatory foods: saturated fat, refined sugars (in sodas, candy, pastries, and sweetened cereals and anything with high fructose corn syrup.) Some people are affected by anything in the nightshade plant family, such as potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplant. Red meats can trigger inflammation.
Choose these anti-inflammatory foods: Omega-3 essential fatty acids are powerful anti-inflammatory agents, found in cold water oily fish like salmon, walnuts, flax seeds, canola oil and pumpkin seeds. Adding omega-3 fatty acid supplements from flax oil and/or fish oil can also help reduce inflammation.
Olive oil is beneficial for reducing inflammation, and also lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease, and can aid in pain reduction. Other healthy oils include rice bran oil, grape seed oil, and walnut oil. Try to buy organic meats in general, avoid lunchmeats, bacon, choose mostly lean poultry and fish.
Choose green leafy vegetables, green and brightly colored vegetables and lots of fresh whole fruits. Berries are good, especially blueberries and raspberries, blackberries and strawberries which are packed with anti-inflammatory phytochemicals and anti-oxidants. The pigments in brightly colored fruits, vegetables and berries contain many phytochemicals that have anti-inflammatory properties. One example is quercetin, which is found in apple and red onion skins and has strong anti-inflammatory properties. Give it a try!
On reflection, I believe my inflammatory process is directly related to a [mistaken] inclusion of gluten in what I eat. I've had celiac since I was about 18 - when I contracted German measles - but it wasn't diagnosed til I was 61! The only icecream I can eat is Ben & Jerry's - the others have 'fillers' that may contain some sort of gluten.
My worst outbreaks were after a 2nd case of German measles, Lyme disease and after Dengue fever!
Consider going on a wheat-free 'diet' for 3 weeks and see what happens!

I suffer from OA, but for the last six months I have lost around ten pounds and my jjoints have never felt better. I have cut out most all sweets and fatty f oods,and am sure a host of other harmful ingredeints that were causing me pain. I also have included raw almonds in my diet.
In addition to a daily dose of glucosamine, I’ve added both turmeric and boswellia. The new routine seems to be helping a bit.
I have modified my diet over the past 2 months and have excluded Gluten, have had a significant decrease in inflamation. This was at the advice of a nutritionist I am seeing.
While there is always much discussion around this, people talk about anything from nightshades to sugar, honestly there is no research, yet, to support a direct link between inflamation and certain foods. Of course we all know that our bodies work differently and I know many people that feel better through there own process of trying to eliminate different foods. A healthy diet, which is lower in fat and sugar, usually leads to some weight loss and that leads to less pain and inflamation. I hope this and all the advice above is helpful to you!

I too am finding that some foods cause my flare-ups, but haven't taken the time to really figure out which ones. Probably because I don't want to have to stop eating them...lol. By the way...I love your profile name!
