Hello, all. Our 5 month-old son is experiencing very unpredictable feeding within the last 2-3 weeks.
He screams for his food (formula), takes and ounce or two and then writhes away angrily like we are trying to poison him and will NOT take any more, period. We are to the point that we are "pit crew" feeding - one parent on standby to warm up and swap out the bottle if he needs more while the other does the feed, 2oz at a time.
His pediatrician recommends that he have at least 32oz per day before we can start bringing in solids, but we are having a good day if we hit 25 or 26.
And, to circumvent any "easy" answers - he is teething, has plenty of wet diapers, is not constipated, is on the right formula, and doesn't spit up much anymore. No infections, nothing that would be easy to spot as a problem - he just plain likes "crying wolf" when it comes to his food as far as we can tell.
We thought it might be something we just heard of called "silent reflux", but are skeptical because he will take solid foods just fine - especially formula-mixed oatmeal! We'd switch to solids full-time if we thought he would get enough nutrition out of it...
Of course, we are concerned for his nutrition but also for the incredible amount of wasted formula we are throwing out after the "1-hour timer" runs out. I think we throw out about 12-16 oz per day - half a day's feeding!! WHO can afford that?
So, we are wondering if anyone else has experienced this and has any useful ideas? We're at our wit's end.
