metoprolol

I was wondering if the drug metoprolol might cause/contribute to feelings of depression. I been taking 25mg twice a day since my bypass in January. I think I read somewhere that it could. It's a hard enough struggle without taking a drug that might inhibit the ability to feel better emotionally.

Yes, definitely. Metoprolol (brand names, Lopressor, Toprol XL ) can cause or exacerbrate depression and anxiety and could contribute to your feelings. You should talk it over with your medical professional.

I take a total of 75 mg Metoprolol daily (I take 1 1/2 tablets of a 25 mg pill twice a day). Metoprolol can cause side effects such as depression, fatigue, insomnia, and lowered heart rate and BP.

Hi Rosey,
I'm now only taking one 25mg tablet of Toprol XL per day. I don't have any side effects now, but i can remember taking larger amounts of Metoprolol early on making me slightly depressed. Maybe your Cardiologist can lighten up on your dose. One that has helped me immensely is excercise.

Bypass itself can cause depression. In fact, it's extremely common for bypass patients to experience some level of depression. I'm sure medication could make it worse. Definitely talk with your doctor about it. I'm taking Lexapro and it's working like a charm. Plus, a therapist that deals with heart patients would be a benefit. I found one here in town that has done more for me than any cardiologist or doctor, at least mentally. Remember, your mindset is a big part of your healing process. So make sure your mind is as healthy as the rest of you. Good luck.
