Foot Swollen

0 Recommendations

My husband had a triple bypass on Sept. 23., and went home on the 3oth. This morning (Monday) he woke up with his left foot red and swollen. It's been that way all day. It's also the same leg where they harvested the vein for his bypass. Should we be concerned? It's painful also. Right now he's sound asleep.

If you made sure his leg is up and it is still swollen I would call your doctor. It may be just regular healing but it could also be a blood clot and since we are not doctors I would call.

I think it is safe to say that many if not most people have some trouble where the vien was removed from the leg, but what you are describing seems atypical. I am over three years post-op and my ankle is still numb, but to my knowledge I never experienced swelling. I think it also seems to make a difference how they harvested the vien. In my case it was done with just a small incision to the side of my knee. Many people still have the long incision down the leg. That can cause all kinds of problems in the beginning. The bottom line is that you need to get on the phone and let your doctor know. Remember, they work for us. Hope everything goes well.

I agree. Call the doctor. I never had the swelling or redness. That would concern me about a blood clot.
Did the release instructions tell him to wear support hose for the first 6 weeks post op?

Called his Dr. and he said it looks more like arthritis and gave him some meds to reduce the soreness and swelling. It's just holding off his walking for the moment.

This is why people have a problem with doctors...so soon after the surgery I would expect him to say, "Come in and let me take a look at it." But that's me, I guess. Hope all goes as planned, but if it continues don't be reluctant to call him again.
