Bad infection post succesful surgery

0 Recommendations

My best friend had triple bypass 12 days ago. All things considered and with some complications, surgery went well. 4 days later he became delirious, confused, his stomach distended. To make a long story short he has a bad case of acinetobacter infection. Prognosis is very guarded. We are all so scared and so is him. Any words of support, feedback would help. In many ways such an irony....

I'm sorry your friend is having such a difficult time. I do know that we can come back from horrible complications. It has to be hard for all of you. I'd still much rather be the patient than the one in the waiting room worrying. Blessings, Allie

Thanks for your positive thoughts Allie. Hope u r well.

Three weeks after my valve replacement I went back to ER with an antiboitic resistant type of infection. I was in hospital for two more weeks where I received three of their best antibiotics intravenously and I was on the suction unit for four days. After I was sent home I had to take a specific antibiotic for another month through IV twice a day
But you know I got over it and I am doing fine and I think so will your friend.
I wish you both all the luck in the world to get over this LITTLE bump in your life.

Thanks for your words of hope blkrino. Hope all is well with you. When did u start to get better after tx at home?

nd even though that seemed to have really helped it was very uncomfortable. I went home Aug. 1st and I had to get iv antibiotics for the whole month of August twice a day at home. I had one of those little taps on my arm where I learned to plug in the iv myself. At the end of August the whole healed closed and I was done. I have not had a problem since except it tired me out quite a bit.
I was told these bugs are all over the place and on your skin and they usually don't bother healthy people but once they get inside...watch out.
I think your friend will have to take a little more care of himself when he is recuperating. I would say he should try to rest and give his body a chance to recover and it may take a little longer than he expected and any sign of fever or infection go to the ER.
I don't want to scare you with this but just be very aware.
Good Luck and I hope he is better soon.

It looks like I cut part of my letter off but the only important part was that when they gave me those three antibiotics it really knocked the crap out of me. All those drugs also kill the good bugs in your system and you have to get them back somehow.

Thanks again. Yes, I have been reading and talking to friends in the health field about these terrible bugs. My main concern is the length of time it takes as my patience is not one of my friend's best traits. But hopefully with all our support and love we'll help him to get where he needs to be. Stay well A:-)
