Total glossectomy & Laryngectomy - HELP!

0 Recommendations

Our father is scheduled for a total gloassectomy and most likely a laryngectomy on October 22nd. My family is desperately trying to find a support group for him. ANY information about the surgery would be greatly appreciated. We would love to find someone who has had this particular surgery for him to talk to. Thank you so much for your time!

Hi KH,
I have not even begun treatment, and am awaiting the dr's decision on whether to do surgery or not, but I wish your dad well and would be happy to communicate as he recuperates, Especially since he will be just a little bit ahead of me:) Has he done any radiation or chemo yet, or was surgery 1st?

It was an easy decision for my dad to go threw with the operation , it was harder for my family and I. Life was defiantly different afterwards but dad adjusted well. Nothing stopped him, he returned to work like as if he was out due to a cold. I will keep your family and your dad in my prayers. Stay strong my dad always was so positive and anyone who knew him said that's what gives him the willpower and strength he has.

Thank you both for your response and prayers. He was radiated on his left side about 2 years ago due to an unknown primary. He was clear until July when they discovered a large tumor in his tongue. He just got done with two rounds of chemo before the surgery. He did wonderful! and i will give you name of the two drugs, if you would like. He had his cat scan today to see what effect the chemo had but from what we can tell it is much softer than before. He is scheduled for his surgery on Thursday the 22nd. I will keep you posted. Please continue with your prayers. We are at MD Anderson in Houston, and we know that his team of doctors with the help of God make are the right decisions on Thursday. Thank yall!

I have heard so many good things about MD Anderson, he is certainly in the best of care:)

I wish your father well. I have been a 12 year survivor and have survived the last two years with minimal toungue mass. I still have my larynx though. Before your father goes into surgery get him an ipod nano or equivalent with his favorate music and some over the head headphones. (they are easier to put on when you are hooked up.) Even better are sound deading headphones (Radio Shack has some good Sony's for 99 and the JVC 250 is really good. (If your order quick you might get it in time for surgery.

Also when he begins to recover, when you visit just read the newspaper, books, etc. Find something humerous. Even a book a bad jokes. He will enjoy that. Also give him a pad of paper and a pad of cards in a spiral ring (Staples or CVS) he will not be talking but will need to communicate.

Hope this helps
