The Sound of One Hand Breaking

...actually it was the wrist. It happened this past Sunday night. Monday; I'm thinking...this hurts maybe a little too much, I'd better get an xray.

Tuesday morning, "Yaaas...come on in. Dr. Xavier can see you."

Dr. X, "I doubt if you broke it. We typically see fractured wrists presenting with a lot more pain."

"I am in pain," I said, trying to get eye contact. "It does hurt."

All the cool Docs wear their stethoscopes to lunch. I'll have to explore this in more detail when typing isn't such a hassle....

However, he was doing the Orchestra Conduction thing with the 'scope as we talked.

He tried a different tactic. He leaned into me as through sharing a confidence. He glared at the nurse who was moving in for a listen.

"Look," he's examining the floor. (The timing of Duvall, this guy's got...).

"I'm going to get you that xray. But the next time you try to diagnose yourself...."

Suddenly the 'scope was around my neck and I was staring at venomous fangs and as the life seeped out of me...

()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()

Ok, everything but that last paragraph was [basically] true.

I stumbled down to Imaging. I got the whir and click. I asked what I should do if the films showed a break. I was to go right up and ask Ortho for an appointment. They could see me in 4 days.

Ah...but I've been learning. I went over to the fortress-office of my normal rheum. A great guy...and great people...I asked one of the nurses to keep an eye on the radiology reads that seem to show up at night.

And that night, my rheum Doc called. "You have a fracture of the distal radius. That must hurt, huh? Put a splint on it. I'll get you into Ortho."

"No, no...they'll see you. I'll call you in the morning." Click. I love the way this Doc can hang up. It is the perfect punctuation after a quick chat.

He did. He got me into Ortho. I got me a brand new cast and a brand new Medical mystery.
