I developed hydrocephalus as an infant. With a mircle the swelling stopped at age 2 and the major resdidual damage from this was my optic nerve and coordination. ISince it had stopped I did not require a shunt however had surgery at age 5 to have the excess fluid removed.
Living with this problem all my lefe has been a real learning experience especially as a child in school. I was the brunt of classmate jokes with painful early years. I was very blessed to make a career in social work and am now retired at age 62.
I just wanted to write to share that in some situations it is difficult to establish disability since the impairment is real however one takes what they get in life and make the best of it. I would love to share more with others who are in similar situation or share with young children who are looking for a future with this disability.
