Poor Sperm Morphology?

0 Recommendations

Anyone know anything about getting pregnant with a husband with less then 2% normal sperm (poor sperm morphology). We found out a year ago that husband had first test 0% normal sperm, then 2%, then he was sent to a urologist, recommended and had varicose surgery. I did research online and this surgery typically doesn't seem to help with morphology, maybe numbers? My husband is stalling to do another sperm analysis and we have pretty much given up hope at this point. Not sure how any Assisted Reproductive Technology would work in this situation, side effects- read that problem may be passed on to male child?? Also, in British Columbia and it seems in Canada in general there is no insurance coverage for any fertility treatments, IVF, ICSI, etc. Anyone have any suggestions, info, advice?

My acupuncturist told me that acupuncture helps with morphology and even count. She said she got a guy to go from zero to 30% morphology!!! Crazy. She thinks it's crazy that doctors even think that 10% is a good percentage.

Find a good acupuncturist that specializes in IF and give it a try!

Hi! First of all I am so sorry you are going through this, it sucks and I feel for you! My DH has poor sperm as well, with him his "best" SA was less than 1% normal morphology. That being said we HAVE gotten pregnant twice naturally however both ended in chemical pg's. After his second SA, our RE referred us to an Andrologist (sp)-- basically a urologist who specializes in male factor infertility. We were told that our best chance was through IVF/ICIS. If your husband is producing sperm and there are some normal ones, there is a good chance that this could work for you. There is plenty of info out there on the process and several of the women here have been through it, basically they separate out the good sperm and use those in fertilization. It did not work for us, however, I also have some "issues" so it was a long shot for us. If you are "problem free" though, this is something I would advise looking into. Best of luck to you!

My husband's first SA showed low morphology (less than 4%) and he started taking Proxeed Plus and some other supplements from GNC for about 6 mos. We just did our first IUI in Oct. and his SA looked much improved - we had 12 million post wash and got a BFP on that cycle. He also made some lifestyle changes with diet, exercise, and undies :)

Just wondering what all your hubby was taking besides the Proxeed Plus

My DH took Proxeed twice a day mixed with juice (it's really bitter) and mixed muscle milk protein shake with a packet of emergen-c 1,000 mg Vit C. So, needless to say, he was getting lots of vitamins - he said he felt better while taking the supplements, too.

Hope that helps!

Most studies of the effects of nutritional supplements on sperm quality suffer from small sample sizes, restricted populations or conflicting results from other studies, so take this with a grain of salt, buuuut....

This study in a peer-reviewed journal showed an antioxidant supplement called pycnogenol made from pine trees can help morphology.

And here is a link to the NIH evaluation of the same substance:

The other thing with sperm is that it is often recommended that he take the supplement regularly for 3 whole months to realize results, since that is how long it takes for the swimmers to grow in there.

GL, my DH has poor morphology too!
