Quick question. My husband an I saw our fertility doctor, had the blood test everything is fine and we are ready to go. However,we have not duscussed how much treatment is going to cost us out of pocket. Is this something we discuss with the doctor or his persoanl assistant?
What is the right way to go about this? ? And will they give us total amount?

Thank You

Our clinic has someone there designated to go over all the financials with us. Your's might as well. I would just call back and ask to someone regarding the cost of whichever treatment it is you are going to choose.

Thank You. will get in on right away!

Our clinic gives us a booklet with the costs of everything broken down for IVF or IUI.

Also, FYI. If your employer will let you contribute to a flexible spending account, you can contribute up to $5000 per year for medical expenses which ends up being tax free dollars, you save about 40% in taxes. That is money you would have used after taxes to pay for treatment anyways:)

Luckily it is open enrollment for my health insurance at work and we have decided to do this. They will automatically take $208.33 per check , but I will have access to $5000 on Jan 1st.

In a way its an interest free prepayment loan to yourself spread out over a year, now we only have to come up with the remaining $6300.

Good Luck!!!

If they don't give you the full total upfront - RUN!

Well I use Boston IVF and the have a financial person who sits down and go over payment plans with you.. I am self pay and the cost after all the blood work is $8600 minus the meds we will need. I don't expect to take lots of meds just because I am producing lots of eggs...hope this helps you out.

Not sure if they can give you a complete upfront estimate since for the most part it's a customized protocol specifically designed for you. I guess, at least they should give you a worst case scenario. Discuss it upfront otherwise you might be like us and get a rude shock after everything is said and done.

My clinic gave me an estimate of $15K, but ended up being $25K. I'm still paying for bills 3 months later after my failed IVF.

I ended up going in for an additional 3 sonograms = $600, then additional meds were ordered because they eggs weren't growing at the rate they'd hoped = $750, ICSI was used because the egg quality was not where they wanted to be = $2800, anesthesiologist charged $1500 instead of $500 (as originally estimated), etc......

Problems that they did not perceive upfront ended up being a huge bill to pay (out-of-pocket) on the back end.

I was told my insurance wouldn't cover anything and would have to pay for labs, US, meds, the works all out of pocket. Turns out my insurance has almost all the meds on formulary and covers all my monitoring labs, tests and US. They just don't cover the IUI/IVF itself. The financial dept of the RE office can tell you the out-of-pocket prices but I found they really don't know about insurance coverage until they submit the claims. Don't bother ask the RE they are clueless. Always plan to spend a little more especially if your taking out any kind of loan so you don't get stuck at the end. Highly recommend the FSA if your employer has one.

My clinic had a financial advisor who met with us as many times as we needed and walked us through the costs. She also helped us pre-qualify for certain meds that were covered by insurance and thoroughly know all of the different insurance plans.

I 2nd the FSA. It isn't much, but it counts. Remember to keep track of your mileage and parking fees too.

THanks for your replies. I finally sat down with the doctor and got all the information.

Has anyone applied for the Grant for IFH?
