Flour and Sugar Fiasco

I am 45 and have tried IVF twice. The pain of failure, when it comes to child bearing was just too much. I managed to get through it, and it has been three months since I have done anything except get myself back to myself. The hormones, and process just sent me spiraling. In the meantime, I had gained weight over the last year, (I'm 5' 3" and about 150lbs. I am usually 130) I have been trying the no flour no sugar healthy eating plan for about two months, trying to get lots of veggie's and fruit in my system, and just flush out all the toxins. Well, has anyone ever tried doing this? I can go about 5 days, and then I just break down and BINGE. And I'm just at my wits end, I'm trying to get healthy, create a healthy vessel for any new pregnancy attempts, and now I think all this overeating is just ruining my chances. Any advice? Any similar stories? I'd love some feedback from anyone. Thanks!

You might want to get the book "You on a Diet" by Drs. Oz and Roisen (sp?) - Dr. Oz is on Oprah a lot. I found it pretty easy to follow and their rationale for eliminating things made sense, it was grounded in a lot of science. The first week of detoxing gave me headaches, but after that I never felt better. I have been in that diet/binge cycle, and I found that the diet was pretty satisfying and the way it was done kind-of turned me off of sweet things, making it easier to stick to.

Hi... try a book called the "fertility diet" it was written by a group of Harvard Professors, and discusses the link between good nutrition and fertility. Completely disregarding the entire fertility aspect of the book... it is one of the best nutrition books I have ever read... My husband and I have stopped trying since our failed IVFs and are slowly moving on with our lives BUT the eating habits and "diet plan" they this book outlined has stuck with us...

Hey there,
I am in the care of a nutritionist who has me on a gluten-free, wheat-free, dairy-free, soy-free, sugar-free, pork-free, corn-free, potato-free diet. She specializes in fertility nutrition. I’ve been on this diet since August and although I don’t have any energy (I miss my carbs and sugar), I feel a little better and I've lost 8 lbs in 2 months. She swears that within a year or two I'll be baby friendly....

My nutritionist claims that she has had 100% success with all her patients, but it takes time. If you have time to wait, then you'll be fine. She also understands that we make mistakes and it's ok to eat the wrong thing, once in a while.

I don't think I could cut out flour and sugar at once. Why not try just sugar first, then add cutting out flour later?

I did the fertility diet recommended by Randine Lewis and did not get pregnant, but the diet was not that hard to do and I never went hungry.

I still keep up some of the eating habits. I found it impossible to just "eliminate" everything bad for me day one. I made small changes each week. I kicked caffeine for a while (but went back because I was only doing it for pregnancy), but did it by subsituting as much green tea as I needed not to get a headache. So, if it was 3 cups...I drank 3 and then each day reduced by one cup till I didn't need it. I drank 2 cups of coffee then so I started with the 3 cups of tea for the afternoon and then went to the am.

I also substituted brown rice pasta for the regular and it was not that bad. Soy cheese isn't cheese so I eliminated pizza for a while and then allowed it once a week. I still stay away from dairy and sugar, but went back to eating wheat, drinking moderately and having my coffee

I always found sucess in changing eating habits by doing a few small changes at a time. Good luck

I just want to thank all of you for your thoughts. I especially enjoyed Dr. Oz's book, and The Fertility Diet is also very very good. Thanks for bringing me back to earth - I tend to float away when I'm just stuck in my own head about this stuff. Again, many thanks.

Glad to be helpful! Good luck.
