I'm just starting my first cycle of IUI in the upcoming weeks. New and overwhelmed.
Just curious and I can't seem to get a consistent answer as to why Menopur might be rx over Puregon. Any comments?
Also, have you heard that synthetic forms of progesterone can lead to birth defects? Do you take only natural forms?
I am starting my first cycle of IUI this month too. We are doing unmedicated though. So, I don't know anything about the meds. Good luck to you!

Hi and welcome. I don't know anything about Menopur, sorry. But I once had the same question as you about synthetic vs. natural forms of progesterone. I have also read a lot of info on synthetic forms being associated with birth defects, but I was relieved to find out on a few websites that there is a difference between the two and that our progesterone supplements are considered natural or bioidentical. See excerpt from one of the websites...
"...we do know this: progestins (synthetic or nonbioidentical) and progesterone (natural or bioidentical) are different." I guess this means that there isn't a lot of info on effects out there, but I hope this helps a little.

When do you go for your first IUI? I'm starting my first cycle of IUI also. I'm scheduled between the 20th-22nd of this month if all goes as planned. Just like Eilwen I'm doing my IUI unmedicated.
I'm pretty surprised to see how many of us are doing IUI for the first time this month. I wish you the best of luck. Keep us posted on how you are doing.

I just went thru my first IUI, and unfortunately was unsuccessful, but we're moving on to IVF. Best of luck to you all!
Re. the progesterone, I don't know much about it, but when I told the RE I was concerned about the meds, (as I have a tendency towards mild depression, and was concerned about mood swings) he said he was going to have me on the natural meds, not synthetic, and that I would do better on them. So no info. re. birth defects, but just about possible effects on the body.
I just had my first IUI today....I took the menopur 75U for 10 days and then Ovadril on the 11th day. I did not have any side effects from the meds. I'll let you know in a few weeks if it was successful! Good luck to you!
AJrunner, this is possibly the best post I've read. I'm expecting the worst side effects from the Menopur (crazy weight gain, mood swings etc) and you didn't have any...there's hope ;)
While on the Menopur did you go in every other day for blood work and an ultrasound?

I had my 4th IUI today...after 5 days of Menopur & day 6 was Ovidrel....I go back on the 1st for b/w for progesterone level and another shot (Pregnyl).
I too had almost NO side effects from Menopur (Yahoo!) outside of caffiene withdrawl the first couple of days. I did go in for b/w and ultrasounds every other day since starting the Menopur.
My previous 3 IUIs were with clomid, or no meds at all with my original OB Gyn. Hoping this will work...good luck to you & hope yours works too!!
