Ringing of the ears

0 Recommendations

Hi everyone. I just joined the group and did so in order to find better information to help care for my brother that had HSE. It's been almost 4 months since he came down with HSE and he recovered remarkably well after a month stunt in the hospital and a 6 days coma. A few days ago he forgot to take his anti-convulsion medicine for 36 hours. He started feeling "weird", with headaches and ringing of the ear. He went back to the ER where he had a convulsion and has been admitted to the hospital for the last 3 days. He is complaining about ringing of the ears and claims that when people talk the hears scrambled voices. His neurologist is still keeping him in the hospital and does not seem aware that some of the symptoms that he felt in the last few days could be considered "normal" for someone that had HSE a few months ago (based on the posts that I read here before).
I am just wondering if any of you had issues with ringing of the ear and if this is something that might stay with him for the long haul. His neurologist seems to be prescribing anti-convulsion medicine aiming to control the ear ringing which seems off to me.
I apologize if this topic was already discussed in the past. I tried to read the old posting but did not come across this subject. Thank you all for your insight and support.
Cheers,

Cassio Alves

Tinnitus Encephalitis West nile virus Vertigo

I had West Nile Virus encephalitis in 2003 and have had ringing in both ears continuously since then. At first it drove me crazy, especially at night when it got quiet, but now I've just learned to live with it.

Look into Menier's Disease on the web. There are some good websites. I have had it for over 20 years, way before HSE. Symtoms include tintinus (ringing), diminished hearing (usually on one side) vertigo, a "scrambled" type of hearing that makes it difficult to discriminate voices, etc. Usually there is also a feeling of "fullness", kind of like water in your ear after you get out of the pool but never goes away.

There is among the researchers an opinion that menier's might have a viral assoc. with...you guessed it... herpes and/or herpes zoster. Best wishes for your brother.

Wasadoc and Bob, thank you both so much for replying to my post. Best of luck to you both.

I don't have ringing I have what I describe is a soft version of the washing machine even when there's not one around. It's not always noticeable, but it can be distracting.

I try never to be in silence because then it annoys me.

Michelle

Thanks for your comment Michelle. I wish you all the best.

DS had some issues too when he forgot to take his anti-convulsion meds and when we spoke to the doctor he indicated that these symptoms came from him missing the medication. He indicated that when you miss doses of your meds it can cause these symptoms and provoke a seizure making it worse than normal. So now needless to say we have been very good about not missing any doses.

Hi, Your brothers experience is similar to mine. I was diagnosed with HSE 4 months ago and spent 4 weeks in hospital.
My main issue now is ringing in the right ear, I find certain sounds and situations frustrating.
I've noticed over the past weeks occasionly the ringing stops, which i take as a positive sign of recovery.
I would suggest your brother employing a strategy to overcome the problem of missing daily medication, i'm sure the chemist (drug store) would have Mon-Sunday containers to make it easier, I even put a spare tablet in my wallet for backup.

Hi Cassio,

I have tinnitus post E as well as hypersensitive hearing. An Ear Doctor tested me and he thinks the problem is in the auditory processing center of the brain.

Regarding anti-convulsive meds - they are oftimes prescribed for other issues. I have been prescribed anti-convulsive meds to prevent migraines.

Bob

I had HSE in December of '95 and since then have had constant ringing in my ears. The ringing seems louder when the room is quiet but when I'm at work or watching TV I don't notice it as much. It is very annoying but not life-threatening so I've learned to live with it.
