herpes encephalitis Is it normal for my short term to be almost gone?

My short term doesn't activate well. And also I feel like I'm constantly dreaming while awake. Is this normal?

I have HE and my short term memory is definitely bad that's why I keep a medical journal to remind me of my life. It seems that many of us have short term memory problems no matter what kind we have.

My memory has gotten a little better with time so when you came down with E might make a difference. I feel like I live in a rerun TV show or a story that I've been told if that is what you mean.

Hi Eemeena

I have trouble with my short term memory after 15 years. It's very normal and I have had to re-train my brain to remember. For me, I turn everything into numbers as I can remember them easily. Maybe that can help you. For example at 8 o'clock I ate 2 pieces of toast. You remember the numbers and this should help the memory.
I would walk my children to school by counting the steps and which way to turn. I could then turn around and recount the steps in reverse to get me home. It was always a good feeling to see my house and to know I wasn't lost.
Use all your senses to help you. What something looks like, colour of or when walking, What does is sound like or was there a cool breeze or warm. All these help to build a memory for later.
To help me, I keep a diary and write things down and always remember that we all forget things.
Cheers Sandy

for us it is!

Well lately I've been really lucky. My short term memory is coming back it's almost normal now and I feel really lucky. Also I only feel like I'm dreaming now when I am really stressed. I actualy thank a dog walking job I got for my short term coming back and my dreaming going away, it's such a relaxing job and I'm really happy.

I'm glad that you found a job that makes you happy & makes you feel like your short term memory is coming back.

its not abnormal.

Eemeena,

Glad to hear things are improving. How long has it been since you had encephalitis?

Sandy,

Thanks so much for posting your memory aids. I was only just beginning to comprehend that things are recorded by multiple senses and that I could use that to recall things. You really clarified for me what I was just beginning to get an inkling of.

I use the number thing, too. I was so frustrated at the grocery store the other day, because I just could not remember what I came for, and I must have taken my list out of my purse, looked at it 15 different times, put it in my pocket then couldn't remember where the list was, and couldn't manage to retrieve what I wanted. Finally, when I counted, OK, I need 5 things, I could remember what they were a lot better.

Emeena ! Oh it's good to hear your memory is a lot better.
You said 'almost back to normal' - that's sort of how I am but then again, I know it's not as much as I'd like still.
Like what Cathy said (Cathy - it's good to feel not alone with this certain problem) and going to a store. If I don't have my list, even if it's short, I then have to tell myself to just go in and try. "O.K.... something to do with a can of something. I know it was a can" and then I usually get it down. NEXT! "O.K. - something that wasn't food" then more thinking. I love my list but spank myself for leaving it at home.
LET'S ALL HANG IN THERE!

I keep my grocery list in my wallet & I enter anything I need on it so if I forget it then I can't buy anything anyways. I do forget to enter things, but my rule is that before I open the last of something I have to put it on the list.

If I don't have the list even if I could buy things I have no chance of getting what I went in for.

My short term memory is horrible since being diagnosed with Encephalitis. I can't remember the names of ANY of my friends that I've known in the last 5 years. Anyone I've known since I was in highschool or younger, i remember them with no problem. It's very frustrating. Someone will remind me their name and 2 minutes later I forget what they said. I have to associate the names with something that will help me remember....For example, a girlfriend of mine is Caren....she has red hair so I associate her with a carrot and I remember Caren is her name! I know that sounds odd but it's the only way it will work. I pray my memory gets better with names bc that is the only thing I have issues with.

I do the same thing with association. My best friend is Dorothy & she used to ask how Toto was until I remembered her name. I have almost no memory before the age 11 & what I have it like a movie I watched a long time ago. I remember when I was 4 better than when I was in elementary school.
