Coma

0 Recommendations

Husband has been in Coma since February 14th, 2009.
Valentines Day...He had a trech & peg done. Moved to a Health care center. I visit him daily. Read to him, pray with him, massage his feet, play his mp3. He does open his eyes. He yawns A lot. I brush his hair. He had two heart attacks one at home & one at hospital. Unsure how much oxygen he lost. He also squeezes my hand.
Any GOOD stories to share or advice?

Hi Ceno and welcome here,
I was in a coma for about 10 weeks after I came down with E. So I am told. Which I gradually came out of over a couple of weeks, apparently.
An important thing about the brain, is that it only does its maintenance and repair while we are asleep.
So a coma provides the opportunity to spend all of its time just working on healing itself.
Best wishes,
Geoff,

Hi Ceno,
The people with the really good stories generally don't end up here.
I do have a good story to share though.
After my illness, I slowly shifted from being comfortable to being broke.
I ended up getting my legal assistance from the local Legal aid Society. What happens there, is they refer you to local attorneys doing their pro bono contribution to society.
For my "State Business Tax & IRS Issues" (unbelievable mess there) I was referred to a semi-retired senior partner from a very prestigious law firm. Like VERY prestigious. He was their tax specialist.
In my introducing myself (the what happened to me speach) he interjects that I am the first person to have had encephalitis he has ever met.
He tells me "I had encephalitis!"
He tells me this story about how he had encephalitis when he was ten and was in a coma for a couple months.
It was the same old story about how the family had been told to make burial plans.
Well,
One day, he pops out of his coma ... totally unscathed.
No problems in school, played sports, went to an Ivy-League College, had a stellar legal career, no interpersonal problems (married to the same person for life) and so on.
Now, that's a good story — a true good story.

I see you mention two heart attacks, Ceno. Was your husband diagnosed as having been touched by encephalitis?

No but when I posted. Only a few topics came up with Brain events.

Ah, Ceno... folks here are survivors/caregivers of encephalitis... which is a swelling/inflammation of the brain. It's a specific diagnosis.
None of us are medical professionals... you are welcome to ask questions of course, but I cannot be certain any of us have sufficient knowledge on the topic you seek.
My thoughts and best wishes go with you and your husband, Cano.

Hi Ceno,
I was in a level 2 border line 1 coma for 2 weeks. I heard the Dr's and nurses taking about harvesting my organs the next day so I faught like hell and woke up 3 hours later. Keep talking to him and playing his music. Tell him to concentrate like he never has before on waking up and keep on touching him. He can hear and feel things. I did and I remember every thing that was said and done.

I don't remember anything until a few years ago, but my family says that I responded after a little while. My family was told I couldn't survive so I wonder who's responding because I couldn't do that if I didn't survive. I hope your husband gets better soon.

Michelle

Thank you so much for that made me feel better.
Did you open your eyes at all? During the coma?

Hi Michelle,
Thank you so much appreciate kind words more than you know...

Ceno, has your husband's doctor said anything about damage to your husband's heart? Is he on forced oxygen? That yawning makes me wonder if he's getting enough oxygen now, do they test his blood gases to see his level or does he have a small thing on his finger that reads it? Also wondering if they've done a CT scan of his brain?

I think it's wonderful all the things that you are doing for your husband. I know he knows you are there. Take good care of yourself.

Hugs ~ hen

I never opened my eyes or showed any response until I was wide awake. I jumped from my coma to consiousness. Your husband is showing that he is trying and sooner or later he will wake up.
Best wishes.

My father-in-law is in a coma right now. He has been since Sept. 11th. He had a headache for a week before going to the doctor, thinking he just had the flu. Come to find out, about ten days after it happened, they started treating him for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. The same day they started this treatment, he went into a coma. Now, it has been seven weeks and he hasn't awakened. Spinal Column fluid confirmed it was RMSF from a tick bite. He has a trach and all of his organs are working fine. He has a feeding tube straight into his intestines because the one to his stomach caused him to stop breathing - acid reflux. He was moved out of ICU to CCU. The doctors in ICU gave hope. The new doctor says he think he will never wake up because of the encephalitis that he had. He thinks that there isn't still swelling on the brain, but scar tissue. I have a lot of FAITH in GOD and still think he will eventually wake up. He yawns a lot and opens his eyes sporadically, like when he wants to, and when you say his name. He moves his legs a lot, but never his arms or hands. Also, he pushes his head forward a lot, but cannot retract it to the bed. We have to push it back. And he shrugs his shoulders as to straighten his posture or something. He is in his late 50's and never had any health problems - just this tick bite! Does anyone have any response to this, positive or negative? The doctors haven't done an MRI or EEG for about three weeks, but want him to leave the hospital in about three weeks. They say he can go to a nursing home or his home and have someone care for him there "until/if he wakes up." We don't know what to do.

What caused your husband's hospitalization? How old is he? Are they still keeping him in a hospital? I'll be praying for his recovery!
