I just want to tell you all that my new neurologist (I've been his patient for just a little over a year) is so interested in the residuals of encephalitis and how to treat a patient who 'had' it, not one who currently 'has' it. I showed him my letter to the editor in Neurology Now and he said, "Way to go!" and gave me a big hug.

Then he started asking me if I knew about the medicine the medical community is using for Alzheimer's patients to help their memory. I told him I had taken it but stopped because the pills gave me the 'runs'. He said "well, I have something for you!" and gave me a one-month sample of Exelon Patch which is a newer version of the drug but instead of swallowing it, you wear a tiny patch for 24 hours and then put on a new one. He's started me at a small dose but if it starts working, he will increase it. I am so excited.

He is really interested in helping me. He gave me advice on how to find a neuro/psych through my insurance company and when I come up with names, let him know who so he can recommend someone.

So, if any of you are within commuting distance, I would suggest that you go see him. Wouldn't it be great if one neuro had 10 patients with the same illness? Just a thought.

HI Ingrid!

Congrats on finding a good neurologist! I think good doctors in general are to find. I know my dad's first neurologist was just horrible. His new one seems better, but she told my mom that you get SLVE from inhaling a germ...i had to find info. on the web and then explained it was from a mosquito bite, like Wes Nile.

Please let us know if the Exelon Patch works for you and what differences you notice. I had read that Aricept would not work for people who had memory loss from E, because E typically affects the frontal lobe of the brain, where Alzehiemers affects the brain differently. My girlfriend's husband is a pharmasit and handles Aricept and had offered to talk to me about it, until i did some research on the internet that said it would not work for people who had had E. Is the Exelon Patch different? I will have to look into it.

My dad is now back in rehab at the hospital (CRU=Critical REhab Unit) and they have a "rehab conference" with the rehab doctor this thursday. I don't know what the next steps are, hopefully he will finally get out of hospital, but i highly doubt he will go home, even thought that would be nice...i bet he will go to a rehad/nursing home type facility. He has yet to meet with a neuropsychologist, and nothing has been set up or discussed as far as that goes. My mom said the neurologist had mentioned him meeting with a neuro/psych, but nothing more has been said and she does not know of any more appts/meetings scheduled with the neurologist. Strange how it is all up in the air...maybe that is just how it goes?? I personally would want firmer info.

Well, good luck with the Exelon Patch! Please let us know how it works for and the benefits and cons you experience from it!

Ingrid,
You took Namenda. That is only one of many different drugs given to Alzheimer's Disease Patients.
Namenda effects GABA.
Some of us (like me) take Aricept.
Aricept effects acetylcholine.
Aricept is an cholinesterase inhibitor.
Exelon is an cholinesterase inhibitor like Aricept.
Welcome to the cholinesterase inhibitor club.

Thanks for reminding me of which drug I took; I couldn't remember either name. LOL. Just started today so I'll give a report in about a week.

Ingrid

well, remember, any sea sickness or the like fades away in a month or two.

I am wondering about medication Trazodone and Mirtazapine an recently abilify. I there a good medicine for anziety and sights. A good doctor in Connecticut? Yale hasn't seemed to help I just end up in the psyciotic ward and it's been at least 8 times. Jody
