I'm relatively new to this group, but my thought on your question is that there can't possibly be an answer to your question without knowing a lot more about the patient, and about what you mean by too low. Too low for survival? outpatient care? Non-intensive care? Discharge from the ER? Seems like if there is any question about someone's BP, then a qualified doctor should be consulted immediately.
Pete.
I had a client who's B/P was 78/56 I have since learned that if it drops below ?/50 I should call an ambulance Thank you though
Hi pricess, I'm an rn and a user and I'm a little suprised at your question.
The narcotics are going to make the patients B/P become depressed. so when you take them off of the stuff they tend to have VERY high b/p
so much so that most treatment programs will place trhem on a dose of clonidine when they are admitted.
after three days the physical withdrawl is finished and the blood pressure returns to normal unless they became dehydrated ( which they do) in which time they would be hypotensive.
A new admitt should be getting V/S every 4*
good luck
Rick
The client has a Rx for Clonidine only if B/P drops below 90/60 Client also has Rx for Seroquel Trazadone and Neurontin to help with detox my concern was how far below 90/60 should the clients B/P be allowed to get before the client was sent to the ER
Clonadine is for high blood pressure it should not be used at all for B/P below90 systolic Nerontin can help with the pain and anxiety they way most physicians write it would be hold dose below 90/60 as the it will drop the blood pressure low if you start out at 90/60 it could kill them
I would take a look at the orders again and then cakk the doctor for clarifacations if it says give below 90/60
Rick
PS blood pressure below 90 systolic dosn't perfuse the hands ( you loose the radial pulse below 90)
so low blood pressure for any amount of time needs to be adressed by the Doc (I think he screwed up on the orders for the clonadine if he said to give below 90/60)
Treat the patient not the numbers if he is handling it ,OK but if he is passing out then go to the ER.
actualy go to the ER would be a good thing to get them evaluated
Rick
OMG thank you all for your responses You were right The Rx was written by a med student and the pharmacy didn't catch the mistake. This discussion may very we'll have saved my clients life Thank you again and God Bless
I have been sick for abot two years and havent worked ... it makes me feel good that we helped this person out.
As an old trauma nurse I hope they roasted the med student over a slowburning George forman grill :)
Have fun with your new job drop a line if you ever need anything
