Several PT's have recently said that all kids with Ds need some form of shoe orthosis because of low muscle tone, yet you always hear about parents who have no idea what orthotics are. What has your PT/Orthotics provider said?

It is my understanding that they should have them both for low tone and also for the lack of arch in their foot. Although I believe this varies by child. we used to see Pat Winders, when she had her private practice, when Devin was between 1-3 years old and she recommended them. Also her Infants & Toddlers PT did recommend them as well and said they did for all kids who had DS.
Our PT had recommended them for my daughter to help stabilize her as she was learning to walk. She's now outgrown her second pair (she's 2 years old), and we have chosen not to get another pair, as she seems to be doing just fine without them. If we start to find that she doesn't continue to progress (running, jumping, etc.), then maybe we'll consider another pair, but nobody (current PT, etc.) is pushing the issue with us.
