Well, well, well. Now, we are looking at AHA scientific statement saying weâre eating WAY too much sugar, and doing a number on our health.
Get this: Americans, on average, are eating 22 teaspoons of added sugars daily. Thereâs a whole lot of evidence now, that says itâs making you fatter, and raising risk of heart disease and diabetes.
The upper limit of added sugar should only be 100 calories a day of sugar for a woman, or 150 calories a day for a man.
Sugars are everywhere! There is sugar in ketchup! Be careful. And another point about sugar, it stokes and stirs up an appetite for more sugar! You think you are eating something simple, like one of those nice sugary breakfast things at the coffee place. But truth is, there could be 34 grams of added sugar, at a rate of 3 calories per gram! YIKES!
Be on sugar alert.
Take a moment here. Understand that the sugar contents are easily marked on food labels. Look where it says Carbohydrates.. and let's say it's 25 grams per serving. It's then broken down into simple sugars and fiber.
If it's got tons of fiber, then it's good. But what if 22 grams are simple sugars?! RUN!
There are other options for your sweet tooth. Agave is a natural sweetner, taken from tequila plant. It's four times as sweet as sugar, and one teaspoon has the same calories, but you only need a quarter of a teaspoon to get that sweetness.
Another calorie-free option is Stevia. This is an herb, and comes in many forms, and itâs quite sweet and need little to sweeten whatever youâre eating.
As for the artifical sweeteners, such as Splenda or sucralose, please know that a small amount does the trick.
Just remember sugar-heart disease connection!
When you pile on the weight, you increase your risk for diabetes and heart disease, so follow the bouncing sugar cube.
