Exercise Routine

I work the late shift from 11p to 7a. When I get off work, I take my wife to work and drop the kids off at school. Then I usually go home and go to sleep. Does anybody have a suggestion as for a good time for me to exercise? I haven't been able to figure out anything yet. Can anybody help me out?

What about before you go to work?. Set aside at least 30 minutes and just go walking around the block or use a treadmill if you have one. Start slow and slowly build your way up. Or get a workout DVD and use it before you go to work. I would tell you after work but you will be hyped up from working out and may not fall asleep which is what happens to a friend of mine that works a similar shift to yours. Put some time aside for yourself every day or every other day. Give us an example of what your day is like and we can give you better answers.

It actually depends on what works for you - are you more likely to do it regularly as soon as you get up? or after you're work is done?

When I worked 3rd shift at the hotel, I'd bring my bike to work, and ride the trails near the hotel for an hour before going home, and do my grocery shopping and bills, etc on the way too, so I could wear off the adreneline rush. But since you've got the other family schedule going on in there - you could do it right after you drop them off, if you don't get more wound up by the exercise. During my day shift now, I do it as soon as I wake up, as it makes me more alert the rest of the day, and I make sure I'm up 2 hours earlier than I need to be so that if I run late, or want to sleep in a little, I still get it in. Good luck! Donna

Typical work day:
7am - get off work, drop off wife and kids
9am - get home, watch a little tv, go to sleep
3pm - wake up
4pm - pick up wife and kids
5-11pm - cook, hang out with kids, wife
10:30 - off to work

Thanks for your response, now that I've written out my schedule I can kinda see where I would have time. I can probably walk on the treadmill after putting the kids down to sleep. Can't believe it took me this long to figure it out. If you have any other suggestions please let me know!

Add a set of dumbbells to your workout as well for some weight training, and you'll really start going to town! Donna

Thanks Donna!

Is it possible for you to get one hour for you at about 5:30pm-6:30 and than pick up with to rest of the family. Good luck.

Hi KLL - I actually work out before I go to bed. When I can, I will exercise twice a day. Usually go to the gym with my husband after work and then before I go to bed. I do indoor walking aerobics to a video and I use weights to do strength training with this. I think I got into a habit of working out at night, because the house was quiet, no one bothers me and I'm done with everything I need to do for the day. Helps me to relax - and it's my "me" time. It works for me - so thought I'd pass it along.
Good luck - Ei

My idea would be to do it when you first woke up, at 3. I'm not sure if you do the pick up at 4 or leave to pick up at 4, but if you're leaving at 4 to pick up, that gives you an hour between waking up and leaving the house, an easy 45 minutes of work out time.

I know for me, best work out time is in the morning as it gives me a boost for the entire day. If it's better for you in the evenings after the kids are in bed, then great. Just tossing out another idea for you to play with.

SINCE U WORK FROM 11PM TIL 7AM WHY DONT U GET UP A LITTLE EARLY BERFORE U GO TO WORK AND EXERCISE SINCE U WILL BE UP ALL NIGHT ANYWAY.

I'm kind of in the same boat you are. I work 7 p.m to 7 a.m. But with that schedule I only work 3 or 4 days a week. So, on my nights off I go to the gym around 1:00 a.m and have it all to myself. I've also enjoyed going after work. If I were in your shoes, I would probably be going after dropping off the family in the morning. You could get in an hour or so of workout time. You may end up getting to sleep a little later (and cutting out the morning TV), but you can adjust by sleeping in a little later, untill you have to pick up the family. In that scenario, you'll be free to spend the evening with your family untill you go to work, instead of working out while they're home. I've also found that I'm less likely to eat as much junk food while working if I know that I need to go to the gym when I get off.

For me when i excersise i get tired afterward i would reccommend it in the morning You said you watch tv then go to sleep How bout getting on the treadmill while you are watching t.v. Does that sound feasable to you?

What about walking on the treadmill as you watch TV....I find that helpful.
