Big scientific breakthrough on CFS

0 Recommendations

This is really exciting. A research paper was published today (from Whittemore Peterson Institute in Nevada, the National Cancer Institute, and the Cleveland Clinic) showing a strong link between infection with the retrovirus XMRV and CFS. The same virus has also been linked to prostate cancer.

The study offers hope that CFS sufferers might gain relief from drugs designed to fight AIDS, cancer and inflammation. The lead investigator said "You can imagine a number of combination therapies that could be quite effective and could at least be used in clinical trials right away." For example, AIDS drugs such as reverse transcriptase inhibitors and integrase inhibitors as well as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and cancer-fighting proteasome inhibitors could be tested as potential treatments for CFS. The cancer drug Velcade is a proteasome inhibitor, although there are no reports that it has been tested against XMRV.

Keep your eyes open for clinical trials, and talk to your doctor!
