Speech development in children with CP

0 Recommendations

Hi Guys

I said I would never do this again!!! That I would just wait for the milestones and celebrate them when they came, but I find myself impatient to know about what my child's speech development is likely to be like. He is 16 months old, seems alert and certainly has very good social communication i.e. he will attempt to vocalise when asked a question and will vocalise if I sing a song and leave a gap. He directly imitates a raspberry (not with much umph, but he gives it a go), a kiss, a click and a da or ah noise and makes lots of vowel sounds. But he has a limited range of other sounds and doesn't seem to be able to imitate and rarely makes a ma sound (much to my horror....... can't wait to hear mama!!!). I have been told that trunk control is quite related to a child's ability to make sounds and he doesn't have full trunk control yet (He is beginning to sit unsupported for short, still periods!! - if his hands reach out from his body he is likely to throw himself off balance). He is also quite a bit stronger on his left side than his right side. I think one side is more related to speech problems than the other, but can't remember which.

Do any parents have any info on how their children developed speech, or if anyone has had a child who may have been similiar to mine at this age who might be able to give me an idea of what to expect from here.

Would love to hear your stories

my child is to young to have speech delays. But I had speech delays as a child. (Learning disability) I had problems with making different sounds. Connecting the sound to the shape the mouth makes. My mom used to put my hand up to her voice box so I could feel the sound the voice box made when her lips formed the words. You could try that with him. To this day when I am learning new difficult words i do that. I was told this is how they teach deaf children to talk. Its worth a try. Anyway I hope my info is useful.

Hey hun - haven't chatted in ages. Anyways, I got a book from the CP Society's library, and it was about a mum basically curing her son of CP. The way she taught him to talk was to say the words onto his arm. Guess he needed the direct stimulation. Can't hurt lol.
Are you using baby signs or sign language with him? It will help you guys talk until he gets his mouth around his words, and can even encourage speech. Good luck!

Thanks guys. Wouldn't mind the reference for that book Sasori. Sounds like it could have a few interesting techniques in it.

Cheers
