Classical CAH

Classical CAH is the more prevalent of the two types of CAH. Individuals can have either salt wasting CAH or the simple virilizing form. Either can be fatal without treatment. Salt wasters produce no cortisol or aldosterone, but have high levels of androgens produced by the adrenal glands. Salt wasting is the most life threatening form of CAH. Simple virilizers can produce some cortisol and aldosterone and as a result there is less risk of developing life-threatening illnesses. Simple virilizers also have high levels of androgens.

Non-classical CAH (NCAH)

Non-classical CAH (NCAH) is the mildest form of CAH. It is often not detected until late adolescence or even into adulthood. NCAH is not normally life threatening because aldosterone and cortisol production are near normal. Like all forms of CAH, late onset individuals have problems with high androgen production.
