Long QT Syndrome and video games

0 Recommendations

I have a 7 year old grandson who was recently diagnosed with long qt syndrome. He has a pacemaker/defibrillator inmplated in him.Yesterday we brought our Wii game system to his house and my son-in-law let us know that he could not play this game because it was a wireless signal game and would interrupt his signal and he would need to be at least 10 inches away from the device....which would make it near impossible to play. Has anyone encountered this or any suggestions?

I am 25, have lqts, and got my ICD last June. A friend of mine has a Wii system, and I have had absolutely no trouble with it interfering with the device (aside from it triggering my SVT while playing Boxing!).

I think he should be fine, but it may be good to check with a professional just in case.

Good luck!

Thank you,
My son-in-law is going to check with his EP but I wanted to see if anyone has actually played with the implanted device. I don't think he wants to box....just bowling & golf seem to interest him. Thanks again...how long have you had LQTS?

I've done the bowling as well, and nothing has interfered! It's actually a lot of fun!
I was officially diagnosed with LQTS 2 about three years ago after genetic testing, but I have had symptoms and problems since I was a child. For many years my doctors were stumped because I never presented on an EKG after an episode, but after 13 long years of trying to figure it out (and also telling me I was crazy or imagining things!), they did. There are still a lot of challenges though because my case continues to be atypical and presents in odd ways. The ICD was talked about, but not seriously considered until an episode I had last spring. So far, it hasn't triggered.
I wish the best for you and your grand-son! As difficult as a LQTS diagnosis can be at such a young age, take it from me, it can be much worse not knowing!
I hope he has fun with the Wii!!

There is a blog at qtsyndrom.ch that has a post discussing this topic. Looks like no one knows for sure, but another blogger did a self-test with no problem... I'm interested in this because we have a Wii and the Yoga program looks really cool....

Oops, I forgot the "e". the address for that blog is qtsyndrome.ch. Sorry.

Hello,

I am the father of the grandchild that CRASHGEM speaks of. I thought I would tell you all what the EP and Medtronics help desk stated.

Their advice was not to use it. They felt that there was not enough test to prove its safe. They also felt that a kid would not keep the controllor 10 inches away at all times. The way I look at it is this, there a plenty of other things for the boys to do, than to play Wii. He loves his playstation.

I just am not willing to take any chances. They felt it could be iffy and it could change each time he uses it.
