Hi! I am relatively new here too. I was diagnosed with tachycardia over 3 years ago. I have a defibrillator and some other heart and health concerns. I would be more than happy to chat with you if I can be of any help. Do you have any specific concerns?

Karen

no i dont feel bad or anything I just try and remain calm. I freak out and my heart goes faster. It just scares the hell out of me. thanx for replying. I just didnt want to feel so alone. it is nice that other people go through this too. thanx

WELCOME!!

I have had tachycardia (SVT) for approx 25 years. In the past five years, it has gotten progressively worse. I was having 8,000-10,000 extra beats a day which made my life a living hell. I have had a heart ablation (which was minimally successful) and also placed on a beta blocker (Toprol XL) approx. 3 years ago; it has been steadily increased as my symptoms worsened. I now take 100 mg in the morning and 50 mg at night. I'm thankful to say it is working well. I have only had one bad episode in the past year.
Best of luck to you!
Sue

thanx for the reply. I just got told to live with it but when it happens it is scary. but they reckon there is nothing wrong with my heart so i gotta believe them and just be happy I am alive. greetings from australia.

Have you by chance had an EP study or stress test done? I had this problem for 20 yrs and was always told to live with it. It then got worse after the birth of my child so I went to a cardiologist and failed the stress test, then had an EP study done and had an ICD implanted. I am also on Toprol XL. I do know what you are feeling. It can be really scary. I would suggest if you haven't had these tests done, to try and get them. My ICD is there to control my heart if ever needed, which is a comfort to me.

no I havent had a stress test and I am not familiar with a EP?? I had a echocardiogram done is that the same thing. I notice it got worse after my last child, eight years ago. and with my cycles. But I have had it for twenty years as well. thanx for replying but being an aussie I dont understand some of your medical lingo.

greeting from australia.

You don't mention your age or how long the v-tachs last or if they are getting progressively worse. You can read about my v-tach progression on my profile.

You didn't ask for advice but in addition to that given above, I would encourage you first to completely stop ingesting caffeine/stimulants of any type (including coffee and smoking) for one month and see what happens. (Of course, if you are hooked on tobacco, I would skip this suggestion and FIRST see the physician mentioned below. Don't put your body into crisis/withdrawal without your physician's approval).

The second thing I would do is find someone who specializes in EP and pay a visit. I am a little surprised that no one ran tests on you which is why I was wondering if this wasn't triggered by stimulants.

You are so lucky to have found this group early on. I have been suffering from V-tach for seven years and just now found the group.

hi I am 47 been suffering from them for about 20 years. I dont smoke have cut back caffiene and dont drink alot. only now and then. they have been getting more frequent but sometimes they only last an hour or sometimes less. I wore a holter and went to a cardiologist at Royal Perth Hospital and she did ECG and a echocardiogram and checked my history. No one ever died from heart attacks in my family. so she said just live with it. but if it gets worse I will go back. thanx for your input. when it happens I think I am to only person it happens too so good to know other people out there have it too. and can lead normal lives. cya from australia

Hi Cazza1961,
I'm an Auzzie to they have a good support group in Perth, Heartnet.com.au Its through the heart foundation. I would be asking your Doc to refer you to another cardiologist or have another check up tell her you are not happy with just living with it

Thank you I will look at the site. The cardiologist I saw at RPH was one of the top in australia. and my sister in lay has the same thing and they told her to live with it. though they gave her pills to take to stop it when it happens. thats all I want something to stop it. thanks for replying.

Hello and welcome.. OMG! I thought I was the only one living with this problem too! VT, and cardiomyopathy. I was also told, I have to learn to live with this, and learn how to breath threw an anxiety attack to calm myself. And believe me, IT HELPS!! I think to myself, "Im living life the fullest, life is too short to be worrying about how fast the beats are beating. I just do my daily duties, and I feel GREAT"

yep i have trried it all. deep breathing putting my head between my legs, relaxing which is hard cause i get scared. thanx for replying.

No you should NOT live with it go to another dr because VT is very dangerous and if not treated you can die from it.

thanx i needed that. lol

Talk to your doctor about :
A) Metoprolol,Beta Blockers.
B) Niacin/Nicotinic Acid,The IR-Immediate Release type.
I do not like tachycardia.
P.S. Have you had your Thyroid checked?

thanx i am going to a different doctor at the same practice and will ask about beta blockers.
i dont know if protocol is different in america or australia but I have been to about six doctors and one top cardiologist and they all said it wasnt life threatening so learn to live with it. thanx for replying

do you have HCM (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy)?
Good website for that. also national organization. Atrial fib is common problem.

Hi,
I have not been diagnosed with anything, but my PA gave me Toprol after looking at my holter monitor results: 5% of 24 hrs, my heart rate was higher than 120 bpm and everthing else was normal (sinus rythm and vent.) too. Mind you, I wore this thing a year ago and she just informed me of the results. I feel fine and only have the palpatation a few times a month. Anyway, my question is what did you take or do during the 25 yrs for you Tachys (before the toprol)? I really don't want to take meds yet. I feel I'm too young and what about the side effects. Any advice will help, thanks.

my reply was for Jetchicky, sorry I'm new at this website.

Hey, Well your in for some news, there are plenty out here with svt, vt, and all kinds of tachs! I had my ablation done on 4/22/05. Ablation is where they go in and make a map of your heart while you are in a bout of it! I have had my heart stoped many times, two with adenasen , one time, two days on nitro drip, talk about ahead banger, and many other ways like valsalva, which you need to know what you are doing when you do it or it can cause some probs! It dose put strain on your valves, thats where they get the name from . Splash Some very cold water in your face, two fingers under your chin where you heart beat is , very careful
with this one too, it can make you passout! I passing -out, that is what I do! I have two kinds of things going on with mine! SVT and I pass -out! I am on 75mgs of mtoprol twice a day now, They just put me on buspur to help me stay calm with it all, hopefully Ha HA! So you see, there are many out here with it ,some little bouts and some big bouts of it! They say here if it last longer than 5 min you need to get an ablation done. The more bouts you have the more strain on the old ticker and things! Yes I think I agree with the others, you need to start asking and looking up on med pages about all this on the eternet and dont forget to breath very deep when all this happens along with prayers, they work!
