Finding a family dealing with cancer.

0 Recommendations

For a class project we would like to raise money for a child with cancer. We are college kids and although we would love to raise everything the family needs but we are being realistic and probably only expect to raise 1000. For that reason we are hoping to find a family who has already started trying to raise money. Is there a website that lists families like this? We would prefer one in the Oklahoma area, we need pictures and a brief story and it would require no work on the part of the family. Any help or suggestions you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

I would start with st.judes or upstate medical syracuse ny.I am sure you would find a family through them. Its beautiful what you are doing my daughter is 14 and she was diagnosed with leukemia at age 8 and is doing very well but the roller coaster and the need for research is huge.I have met alot of children and familys and each ones needs are diffrent.

Hi Liz,
Thank you for doing this. I would suggest that you contact the social worker at the OK COG (Children's Oncology Hospitals) and let them know what you are doing. They should be able to refer you to family could use your support.

First as a mom of a child in the last stage of brain cancer, thank you for thinking of our children. I can give you quite a few families that could use your help financially and all of us could use your help to raise awareness of childhood cancers. Most people are not aware that September is Childhood Cancer month. Most people are unaware of the horrible statistics we face every day...wanting to ignore them - knowing each child's battle is it's own unique journey, but we need people aware of not only the battles the families go thru on a daily basis but the battles our children, if survivors, battle the rest of their lives. Typically parents of children with cancer are so overwhelmed by the emotional and financial aspects that we don't have the time to advocate for ourselves. We need help reaching out to legislature for additional funding...we need help raising money for research so other children will someday have better outcomes. My son, Johnathon was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma 3 days after turning 3 in Oct. 2008. In March, we were told to just love him for what time was left, his cancer has proven stronger than high dose chemo and max dosage radition to brain and spine. Please let me know if you need help locating a family or if there is anything else I could do to help you help our children.

Our organization has a network of families nationwide listed on our website. Feel free to check it out and contact us if you'd like to pursue fundraising for any of our families. We'd be happy to help however we can.

Teri...
Please let me know how you are today, and how is your precious little boy.. Aiden is doing OK, not great but we are Thankful for every 'baby step' we take on his road to recovery. I, too, could scream from the lack of awareness of Childhood Cancer.
Look foward to seeing your words..
Stay strong..luv Elaine

Please know you will be forever blessed for the amazing work you are doing today. I believe another parent wrote about Childhoold Cancer awarness ..these children need the EVERYONE to know about this monster, and how it effects every corner of your world, everyday from words "your child has cancer" until forever. Many many families need help in everyway you can image, I think your $1000 can grown 10x over by investing in awareness..there is an amazing website that offers Fund Raising opportunities ..cancerfearsme.org. Sharon Perfetti is the Angel who started the org. please contact her..she will know Aiden and I.
How blessed we are that you are YOU !!
luv Elaine and my little 'hero' Aiden

Robert "Ethan" Lee Henry III was born on June 12, 2009, a healthy 7lb 11oz. Ethan was a very active, vibrant 6 yr old that played soccer and t-ball. On January 6, 2009, he came down with a fever that lasted for more than 4 weeks. After hearing for several weeks from his pediatrician that "sometimes kids just get fevers for no reason and it will go away on its own" he was finally referred to Children's Hospital at OU Medical Center in Oklahoma where he was diagnosed on February 3, 2009, with Embryonal Undifferentiated Sarcoma, a very rare malignant cancer affecting mostly a pediatric population. The 11 cm mass in his liver surely would have killed him if left untreated. So he spent the next 3 months receiving toxic chemotherapy which ultimately reduced the mass in size but it remained unresectable. After 6 rounds of Isofosfamide and Doxorubicin, Ethan received a full liver transplant from a living donor on May 30, 2009, at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. This rare procedure called a "Domino Tranplant" allowed two children's lives to be saved. Ethan is now in recovery and will begin new chemotherapy to remove any "left over" cancer cells that may remain behind before returning to Oklahoma in late September. Thank you for all of your suggestions and encouragement. We weren't able to find a specific family but we did sell signed sports equipment for cancer research. Raised 1500. Not a lot in the great scheme of things but it hit our class hard and raised awareness. After all of your posts about your amazingly brave children I doubt I'll stop helping with the cause now. God Bless all of you.
