My mum has just completed her 2nd round of chemo. She's experiencing joint pains. Has anyone experience this before? What can be done to help relieve the pain?

Tylenol Norco Pain Chronic pain Lyrica Roxicodone Soma Lamictal Oxycontin
My husband experienced joint pain after each of his treatments with chemo. Depending on what kind she is on, more than likely joint pain is one of the side effects.
After getting his IV out (he has a dual cathater) from the home chemo, he was also given the drug Nulasta to help boost the red cell count. Nulasta also caused him to have joint pain.
He already had some pain medicine at home, but took Tylenol, or Ibuprofin to see if that would relieve the pain prior to taking the pain medication.
Also, I would "message" his legs and arms with lotion to help with the stiffness and soarness. Even a shower seemed to help out.
Try whatever sounds good......and when in doubt contact the medical team for other suggestions.
Good luck! Hope your mom has success.

Hi Susan
Thank you so much for your reply. It feels terrible seeing her in pain and not being able to do anything about it.
I wonder if there's any implication if we use medicated lotions to ease her pains! Someone recommended "BioFreeze" which is a type of lotion sportsmen use to relieve pain in joints due to exertion. Just not sure if it would be ok to use it. We'll be seeing her oncologist this thursday. I'll check it out and let you know if it's alright to use!
Oh... I tried using a hot water bag. It helps to relieve the discomfort a little but the only draw back is i was told you can't leave it in the same spot for not more than 30 minutes.
You may want to try that too.
Will let you know if I find any other effective ways other than "pumping" in more chemicals!
Take care and God bless you!

they gave me prenisone which i have not tried, because i do notwant any more of than in my body. there is arnica which comes in a gel i get the neulasta also. i love the hot tub. after the pump comes out and sometimes you just have to get up and walk it out as much or as little as you can. off for the next fun treatment.
Thank you all for the feedback. Will let her know the options available. Once again.... Thank you!!
Try Myoflex cream, it is sold OTC, it is asprin type of cream, that doesn't stain like Bio-freeze and has a very light pleasant smell, I used this a lot back after my treatments, and also used it a lot back when I had my massage business.
I know the pain from the chemo treatment is very hard to deal with sometimes, and then to add the pain after the Neulasta shots, glad even the sheets can hurt touching you, I feel for you Mom, best wishes to you and her.
Thanks! i'll check it out at the pharmacy tomorrow.
Try Norco. It was the only thing that relieved my pain. Are you sure it's not the beginning of neuropathy? The Neulasta never bothered me much, except for a day or two. My neuropathy ended up bothering my joints as well as the burning, numbness, etc. It started when I thought my feet hurt too much when I walked and my hands felt arthritic all of a sudden.
The only thing that helps with my pain is Lyrica and Lamictal, plus Avinza(24 hr pain med).
I also have chronic pain, so it may be a little worse than some.
Hope this helps some
Lydocaine ointment needs a prescription but works if pain is experienced in various areas.
Good luck.
I finished chemo in November 2006,I had 4 dd Adriamyacin,4 dd Taxotere,7 months of Herceptin and currently take Tamoxifen. My joints all hurt, all the time.Sometimes,my toes hurt so bad that it makes me cry.I also ended up with neuropathy, post mastectomy pain syndrome and fibromyalgia, just to name a few.The chemo just seemed to eat my body up from the inside out.My teeth are crumbling, breaking off and falling out,I've lost 7 already and I had great teeth prior to my diagnosis.I have tried anything and everything for the constant pain, from creams to heating pads, chiropactic and TENS unit.I finally gave up and found a pain management Dr.The only way I get any relief at all is Oxycontin 60 mg 3x day with Dilaudid and Roxicodone 15 mg for breakthrough episodes.I love Lyrica but I can't handle feeling drunk as a skunk.I also take Soma and 800 mg Ibuprofen.I use Lidocaine patches sometimes as well as Voltaren gel.I wish I could tell you that something works but nothing does even with all the heavy-duty narcotics that I take.
Doctors have given my mum some medication to ease the pain and it works sometimes only. Lately, she's been complaining that both her feet feels "sandy" all the time and at times, they feel a little numb... so it may be neuropathy.
